I ask TKR about it recently and he advise me to contact the manufactorer as he wasnt too sure.

I contact Koolance and they told me to email a photo of the PCB layout (which meant taken off the heatsink, which i wasnt prepared to do just yet)

got the same thing as Op, very annoying, well I had 2 MSI 6970's and bought a third, packaging and looks the same except no back plate and newer bios. Not real impressed, no doubt when I get a 4th I will also have to get another without the backplate, pretty lame.

Then don't buy a 4th?!

Buy something else?

Why does everyone rave about the importance of bios flashing? Surely the extra shaders don't actually make that big of a difference to real world use.....do they?

This is a well known PCB and design change. The rev 2 came out months ago. Thats why there are 2 diff water blocks for them and the BIOS switch was removed.

One is version 1 and the other is version 2. Saphire have the exact same issue. The difference with Saphire is the external box is IDENTICAL between versions, but the cards are 99% different in most visual ways. I got stung by that bad boy

Am I the only one really confused here? Sure, you don't have a back plate, but does this really mean shittier performance and having to buy two separate blocks?

the GPU core looks to have identical location and mount holes, for instance.

hah! that sucks man... I have resorted to opening up graphics cards in the shop to make sure they are exactly what I want before buying them... its the only way to know what you are getting cause the model numbers are just BS.

haha this is an old thread, it got revived somehow, i sold them and got gtx 580s, its a way better product .

As for the new reference design, people with backplates you are lucky buggers, it was a short release, AMD were apparently producing them at a lost, so thats why they changed it.
