Default Official Chimp Challenge 2011 Thread

What is the Chimp Challenge?

In the last four years we have participated in a annual Challenge, to earn the most amount of Chimp Points, for the lucky jaded monkey, to not come last and get the dreaded monkey paw.

It started off as a challenge between Maximum PC and overclockers.com once they realized they both had sub-teams with a monkey themed name. A couple of years ago both us and [H]ard were invited, and since then it has been ran each year in May.

Last year there were 9 teams, us, overclock.net, overclockers.com, EVGA, MAX pc, Hardware Canucks, Custom pc & Bit tech, TSC! Russia & Techpowerup.

Rules For 2011

1. Each team will fold for 10 days solid for the duration of the contest.
A "Chimp Points" system will be used to determine the placings as follows:
The total points of each parent team is taken from the months of October 2010 to February 2011.
One-tenth of a percent (0.1%) of the respective team's 5-month total will be the points required to earn one (1) Chimp Point.
The team with the most Chimp Points earned at the end of the 10 days will be declared the winner.

EVGA - 2,189,017,921 5-month total 2,189,018 = 1 Chimp Point
Overclock.net - 1,103,027,683 5-month total 1,103,028 = 1 Chimp Point
Overclockers.com - 687,521,160 5-month total 687,521 = 1 Chimp Point
Maximum PC Magazine - 598,691,922 5-month total 598,692 = 1 Chimp Point
TSC! Russia - 740,887,400 5-month total 740,887 = 1 Chimp Point
CustomPC & BitTech - 653,039,005 5-month total 653,039 = 1 Chimp Point
Overclockers Australia - 241,621,336 5-month total 241,621 = 1 Chimp Point
TechPowerUp! - 217,346,120 5-month total 217,346 = 1 Chimp Point
Hardware Canucks Forum - 232,244,119 5-month total 232,244 30% increase 301,917 = 1 Chimp Point

2. Start time for the contest is Thursday, May 5th at 12pm, Pacific Daylight Time (UTC -7) That equates to 5:00 AM Friday May 6, 2011 in Australia/Melbourne.
The finish for the contest is Sunday, May 15th at 12pm, Pacific Daylight Time (UTC -7) That equates to 5:00 AM Monday May 16, 2011 in Australia/Melbourne.

3. The victor gets to claim the lucky jaded monkey as the prize.
Tales have been told of untold wealth and fame that comes with this.
The victorious team is allowed to display in any honorary fashion the jaded monkey, the losing teams are forbidden to display it.
The losing teams are bestowed the dreaded monkey's paw, which is said to be cursed.
People have been known for have very bad luck with this paw!

4. Team captains are as follows:
OCF - Captain: David
MaxPC - Captain: Full_Taoer
OCAU - Captain: leroyxx
OCN - Captain: zodac
EVGA - Captain: Barbarossa17
CPC & bit-tech - Captain: coolamasta
Hardware Canuks - Captain: chriskwarren
TSC! Russia - Captain: Hil
Tech Power Up - Captain: BUCK NASTY

5. In the event of a close race, a Stanford daily_user_summary.txt file will be the official source for points information.

6. Only team captains are allowed to make changes to rules and will be looking out for any "foul play". We should not do anything that hurts the folding project. This includes but is not limited to, priming WUs and installing clients on machines without proper permission.

7. The official folding names are:
OCF - T32monkeys
MaxPC - maximum_monkey
OCAU - Monkey_Bollocks
OCN - OCNChimpin
EVGA - EVGApes
CPC & bit-tech - CustomBitChimps
Hardware Canuks - Beavers_Gone_Bananas
TSC! Russia - TSCh!mp
Tech Power Up - ChimPowerUp

8. Have fun and keep it positive

How can I help OCAU and Team 24 win?

All you need to do is change your folding name to Monkey_Bollocks, if you are running smp or -bigadv please PM me for the passkey, and put that into your client as well. All the points goes towards team 24, so if we can switch over a couple days before, around the start of May, that would be great, as changing names mid unit does not always work too well, especially with -bigadv units.

Best practice would be to run -oneunit and then -configonly and change the name and passkey if required - at this stage there is no requirement for passkeys for GPU folders. Be aware that the -oneunit switch will stop folding after that unit, so if it finishes at 3am and you are not awake, it will not fold again until you re-start the client.

If you wish to use your own passkey, you will need to change the client name to Monkey_Bollocks and then fold 10 WU under that name to bonus qualify that passkey through Stanford, which would have to be done before the start of the challenge.

Easy way to fold: http://fahtracker.com/ Change the Name to Monkey_Bollocks and Team to 24! If you do SMP you will need a passkey - PM me for it.

Folding setup wiki here: http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/...llation_Guides

Want more information?

Post in this thread, PM me for the passkey or if there is anything else you don't want to seem too noobish to ask in this thread.

We all are willing to help out, there is also a Team 24 IRC channel that is fairly active and problems can be solved in real time generally there as well.

Links

OCAU Smack talk thread I have linked other teams threads there as well.

Stats hosting HWC have a stats page here that incorporates a shout out box, also has twitter integration so you can use #chimp2011 and it will show up there, for everyone to fling poo, or just chat in general

EVGA also have a non official stats page here as needed.

Other Stuff

Last year the challenge was to a pre-determined amount of points, this year that has changed significantly to make every team competitive, we ran hard and well last year but managed to come in last We desperately need to get rid of the monkey paw, and I would then hope that our rant thread will go in hiding from now on

I'm in. I haven't folded for over a year (last points in May 2010, and that was just the PS3).

Can't believe how amazingly easy it is to fold now with the FAH GPU Tracker and autoinstall, got it running now and pumping out 4500ppd. What a better way to start than join the Chimp Challenge. Bring it on!

I have the bigadv setup just curious what would be the best day to start this up? Say on the 4th or 5th? Just want the points to drop at the start

It would depend on what sort of time you are seeing for units to finish... if its around 2 days, then change it over on like the 4th.

Just remember that the comp starts at 5:00 AM Thursday May 6 for us, so if your wanting to get that jump, you need to try and work it so that it drops not long after that time.

I've just gotten back into folding with the GPU tracker as well. Simplifies so many things

So just to make sure, all I need to do is install the Folding@Home application, and set my username to 'Monkey_Bollocks'?

Does it count if I start a -bigadv unit the day before and then it finishes on the first day or do I have to start the unit on the first day of the competition?
