Yeah, I believe there was some discussion in their forums about emulating x86 over top of whatever flavour of Linux ends up in the producton version, with caveats regarding speed as you mentioned.

It's sounds like it will be a pretty flexible device... find any open source software that can be compiled for ARM and you can run it, with no restrictions or limitations beyond system resources. Which I guess is the point of open source, so duh... In case it's not already blindingly obvious, I have little experience with anything other than x86 architectures, so I'm learning as I go here.

I'd love to know how they got Quake 3 running? Recompiled/reverse engineered or emulated? Any thoughts?

Carmack releases his game engine code under the GPL on a regular basis (from memory it's 3 or so engines behind whatever is current).

Quake 3 got GPLed quite some time ago. I'd guess there was already an arm port floating around.

Just got my answer by reading through the comment thread under the vid.

Yep, the engine is open source, but they compiled the ARM version themelves.

Dear raspberrypi.org,

Please to be shipping a copy of your ARM-compiled Quake3 with my Pi when I buy it.

Thanks be to you,

Ive been following this project for a while now and while we think of these as toys they are design with the intention of providing easy access to computers for developing countries.

On release you will be able to "buy one, donate one" or alternatively buy one. This is a really good idea!

The main reason for the composite out is that the hdmi socket is a lot less prevalent in the market for these.

USB is host mode only you cannot power the board from it as someone has stated.

Using older chips is part of the cost cutting measured involved. I would love to see networks of these in schools particularly with the ethernet over power which they are planning on!

This is certainly and awesome quest these people are on. I will defiantly be buying/donating a couple.

Totally agree, they have hit the nail on the head in terms of upfront cost, compatability, and potential to reach a very wide group of students who would otherwise not have access to anything this clever.

I do not mean to belittle the aims of the project by suggesting that this is more a toy than an educational tool; simply that for those of us lucky enough to not 'need' it, it provides lots of interesting opportunities.

I reckon I'll be taking part in the 'buy one, give one' scheme too. Why wouldn't we?

Has some pics of the alpha board.

Would love to grab a few of these as media players. Especially for old TVs without HDMI or VGA. Good 'ol composite video.

Anyone know of anything similar that's currently available for < $100? Needs to run a flavour of linux... can't be too gutless, php and mysql are on the cards.
The Roku system I mentioned above. Similar hardware, nice case, and just under $100.

Alternatively the original Beagle board is now $125, and it's got a significantly more powerful ARM Cortex A8.

The Roku can be used as a web server/general linux box? I got the impression it was a dedicated media player? Is there much wizardry required to get it doing other things?

Ah, my mistake. I thought that people had got standard Linux distributions running on it, but I was wrong.

As alternatives, there's the SheevaPlug and GuruPlug. No good for video, but find as a webserver.

Doubt it...

Last I checked, you'll need at least a ARM Cortex series processor. (I could be wrong, but I do recall it was certain processors based on Cortex A8 and the majority of A9 based ones.)

My plans include:
Raspberry Pi Model B -$35
A-RAM Class 10 SD Card 32GB -$39
AOC e2795Vh 27in Widescreen LED Monitor -$289 -For it's USB hub to power the RasPi
Logitech K400 Wireless Touch Keyboard -I already have it and it's unused

Find a location to put the monitor in my room, double sided tape the RasPi to the back of the monitor, neatly organised cables.

Learn some coding and play around with a lot of different GNU/Linux and BSD distros such as Arch Linux with the basics... Failing that a HTPC or some form of a server.
