I think in the near future we can expect to see full sized desktop cases with bricks in them and a raspberry pi hot glue to the inside with extension cables running off it lol

I contemplated putting mine into an old USB HDD enclosure for sh1ts and giggles But then I came to my senses, I'll probably use one of those little plastic boxes you get from DSE.

i thought it said because the raspberrypi was made on the cheap and they didn't try to line all the things up/ space constraints?

Well XBMC is working great, very impressed for such an early build (and it was put together before the devs even had a Pi. Impressive). It's only going to get better from here

Looking to get rid of my Boxee Box once it becomes a little more mature, but it's not far off

Awesome. Couple of questions:

How's the speed of XBMC in terms of navigation and displaying metadata, etc?
Is your library/database thing stored on the local SD card?
Have you tried 1080p MKVs with Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD?

The first few builds were a bit clunky, but the later builds have a newer version of the skin (Confluence) that seem to be streamlined a bit, and now it's really quite quick and smooth. I'm impressed with the speed now It's not without its issues (sometimes you lose the background and/or thumbnails for a bit), but for such an early build it's really impressive.

By default, yes (which works totally fine), however I've just setup a MySQL server to keep it, just to avoid losing the DB should I format the card or something daft. I just have the Pi wired to my network, so it's just retrieving all my files from my PC anyway (with regards to the library).

I've tried 1080p and it plays fine, but I don't have any TrueHD or DTS-HD files. I'll try and grab one to test. I imagine it'll be totally fine though, assuming your amp supports it

Thanks for the info. Looks like, with a nice case, the RPi could turn out to be a media player to be reckoned with. If only it didn't have stuff coming out of all 4 sides.

Perhaps a case with screwmounts to attach to the VESA mounting point on the back of your TV?
The size of the thing, you'd probably only need a single screw hole to hold it.

Guess you'd need an IR extender if you wanted a remote though.

If you have a smartphone, there's a pretty good XBMC Remote app that works via wifi

Anyone know if one of these would be any good as custom router with something like smoothwall, m0n0wall, pfsense, or custom debian based...

An issue I could see is they only have one ethernet jack... I guess a possibility would be to use a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor maybe, but not sure how fast/slow they are?
