Looks like they're getting made now http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/509

Definitely going to be jumping on these when they are up for sale.

For a mere several thousand pounds, you could've had one of the beta boards on ebay. Apparently they raised >15000 pounds by auctioning the first 10 boards off.

It's a cool project for sure. But the real issue in education isn't resources in the form of hardware. It's finding teachers with the skill and passion to, not only know how to use them, but being able to create interesting and engaging activities. If you can't do this on a PC or Mac, then you surely won't be able to do this with the Raspberry Pi.

I fear that many schools might order this (because it's cheap, and sounds like a good idea when you talk about it a meeting), but that they will end up in a drawer or box very quickly. The initial teacher might be all over it, but then he leaves and it's too hard for the next one and back to Office and Adobe.

The price is pretty good, but you still need a monitor, keyboard and mouse. So for that money you could build an ARM based netbook or something like that.

The other point I'd like to make about bringing back the Science into ICT education is that most schools won't have students taking up ICT if you do that. Yes there are always a few that are really into ICT and will love you for it, but you will alienate the rest and if you're teaching won't have students for next year and therefore no job :/

So all up it's a really cool project, but in terms of affecting ICT education: No chance.

Agree, similarly the idea posted on the previous page that it is aimed at developing countries is bunk too. Sure, it's cheaper than an OLPC, but if it needs a monitor, keyboard, etc as well and hasn't been build to be as resilient as an OLPC (not to mention the many ways to charge an OLPC, even though the RaspberryPi will be lower power it's still got to get it somewhere), then it's effectively useless to many in that target market.

Can't wait to get one to learn server management. Hopefully
Debian will run on it.

Checking in on this. Thinking of picking up a 24" LCD, putting one of these in a little plastic box, gluing it to the back and I have a sweet media player for the bedroom?

It sounds like a few people might have that idea.

Personally, I'm planning to see if I can set one up for the simple task of controlling my fish tank lights. So sick of timers failing to keep time. At least this will be able to get accurate time from NTP.
I'll probably add a webcam once I set it up though, so it's not all completely wasted computing power

Apparently, the graphics part of the package does hold its own against Nvidia's solution.

...The CPU side is weaker though.

add a 1.2ghz dual core arm cortex a8 in there, 512mb ram and a plastic casing around it, up the price to $40-50 and it will be perfect.

A day late, but we now have an expected manufacturing finish date!!

I’ve got some bad and good news about manufacturing. The bad news is that it’s taking a little longer than we’d hoped, because the factory had some trouble sourcing a specific component. The quartz crystal package we had chosen when we thought we were manufacturing in the UK is readily available over here in Europe, and was the cheapest we could find; but it turns out that in China, that crystal package has been overtaken in price and size by a smaller, cheaper one, so the one we’d designed for has been a bit hard to find. The factory has sourced crystals now, so we’re all go. The good news is that this finally means we have a date for the first batch: the boards will be finished on February 20. Eben and I may be going to China to make sure that the boards can be brought up properly for that date if necessary. We’ll be airfreighting them to the UK immediately, so you should be able to buy them before the end of the month.
Credit cards at the ready lads!
