Either way, i want 4 x 750GB in RAID5... so whichever one works prettiest wins!
- If you use a slimline drive, you can get caddy to fit slimline + 2.5" or 3.5" I think

- No you can't - I think they require a minimum of 160gb or something like that.

I would just forgo the optical drive, USB dvd drive ftw. How often do you use optical drives anyway, waste of space I say !

-'ve! I meant can i INSTALL it onto a USB flash drive (similar to the linux flavours)...

I would like the optical, as i'm using it as a HTPC as well... my iMac (late 2008) optical is f*cking slow and noisy! I have about 400 CD's that need to be ripped.

And I found out that Win Serv 08 R2 doens't allow Raid5 expansion Gosh I miss my old RocketRaid 2420 card... wish i didn't sell it now!

Ideally the OS would be able to install on USB, so I don't lose a drive in the RAID to the OS

Looking for decent software raid (ZFS/XFS)

Compatiability with Utorrent (So windows, or linux 32bit libraries)

I've looked at WHS 2011, but it's a bitch to get on USB, and not too sure how you would recover if your OS died, how do you pull the data back off your software raid?.

Looked at Openfiler with XFS (In front currently)
FreeNas with ZFS, but it seems tricky to get uTorrent running on this
Solaris11 with ZFS, same as above with uTorrent.

I'm a windows engineer by trade, and I have pretty limited UNIX experience, so I'd hope for something easish to manage and install stuff on (Something freenas seemed to struggle with)
Im in a similar boat, but im also planning on running as a media center

What i ended up doing is installing unbuntu (has alot more application support) and build a mdadm raid 5 on that, im also a software engineer (.NET mainly) and it was interesting, stuffed it the 1st time round (dos partition on 3tb drives ) all in all its a pain in the arse and if you can go with windows, im probably going to ditch the mdadm raid and go to Win server.

(its rebuilding the raid 5 now 10 hours in 8 to go)

Also networking has been a pita! i wanted to do a simple ICS with a crossover to my main system and was unable to get the unbuntu box to grab the internet connection or use the dhcp provided by by pc.

for a business, yes. for a home fileserver - i'd say so (especially for ZFS). for a htpc/play box - no.

4GB of ECC for $69 isn't all that bad. I bought 8GB.

This is a similiar unit but has the 3.5" in a hot swap tray as well as a slim DVD.

Sigh have a few more issues now.

I have the microserver with 8GB ram. I have a hitachi 3tb 7200 drive where i chucked a few 1080p files on.

I am using the 250gb hard drive and have win 7 64 bit with VLC as the player.

Now i have installed a HIS 5450 but i still cannot play 1080p properly even with the latest drivers. Anyone what could be causing this?

Edit - In VLC i turned on GPL acceleration which seems to make the 1080p play ok. But it makes my CPU run at 60% hmm

It is indeed possible to install server 2008 R2 to USB
http://blog.frankovic.net/2010/06/in...-on-usb-stick/

Not sure if it would work for WHS as it has a 160GB hdd requirement.

Though, might be possible to install on a usb 2.5" drive, then copy it to a lil USB stick big enough to hold the OS (8GB?)

I've decided against using Server 2008/WHS 11 as the software RAID5 doesn't support expansion, which is kinda useless, I want the option to add more / larger drives down the track

you can put it in that compartment up the top left where the power and sata cables are routed.

For those who has a P410 raid card, have you found a secure place to store the battery inside the microserver?

Not sure about the various kingston memories that have been discussed recently however I purchased KTH-PL313E/4G for $49.86 inc , shipping free but this was from a large IT distributor in australia.

these are the modules listed if you use kingstons memory finder.

I will have 3-4 spare at this stage to be confirmed.

diagram of cable. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images...84sff8087.png/

the cables mentioned above from pc-pitstop are unsuitable. the best solution that pc-pitstop were able to provide is an adaptor that will convert the male sff-8087 from backplane to remale sff-8087 which will allow a standard sff-8484 (host) to sff-8087 (target-male) connector to connect up to p400.

don't bother with cselex as they took 3000 email to still not understand my request.

I am also able to modify dl380 version of p400 controller to the ml series version that has connectors in the correct orientation as to not foul on the drive cage.
Any more details on where to get this custom cable ?
