Is anyone here using the Adaptec 3405 RAID controller?
For a new controller (supporting 3tb drives and RAID 5) and under $400 is this the best buy atm?

Looks like the N40 has finally landed, Still listed at $230ex gst.

I'm so tempted to pick one up. Hopefully warcom and the usual guys will start selling it next week.

Hey all, placed an order for the N40L from EYO and picking up on Monday.

My plan is purely just to store data, i won't be streaming or serving data to any users, I'll prob purchase 4 (maybe 5 or 6) x 3TB Hitachi Hard drives.

Is the N40L suited for my needs? or am i wasting money?

Should i go with RAID? I'm thinking of going with RAID 0

Should i just use each hard drive as separate volumes to store my data?

Thanks =)

Congrats on your new N40L purchase!

Since all you looking for is a file server, give FreeNAS a try. It's free and gives you added advantage of ZFS.

Personally, i don't like the idea to have so many drive letters mapped to my pc in network. Unless, you have a reason to have separate volume? It all depends on your data requirements in the end and how you would like your network users to use that data

Default VMware or Citrix?

How many people still running virtualisation on their boxes? Keen to hear on which one performs better ESXi or XenServer. I am thinking of grabbing a N40L to add to my existing collection to run some virtual application servers and maybe a virtual desktop as well. Nothing too heavy, maybe only 3 VMs all up.

ESXi 5.0. Lower core memory usage than XenServer.

I think sub.mesa summarized it really well in his FAQ

Hmmmm, I might grab a N40L and whack ESXi on it. Hopefully my 2 N36Ls don't start to feel jealous.

I'm thinking for this box, 32Gb SSD for ESXi (or even a USB stick) and the 4 caddy HDDs in RAID-5 for the virtual machines. I've still got 8Gb non-ECC ram that I swapped out for ECC ram in my N36L which I can use in the new box.

The last piece of the puzzel will be iKVM. I might pull my RAC card out of one of the other boxes or buy another one. Unless there is a cheaper option now.
