When I say media server it just streams them, stores them and backups all the music/vid files etc. I think I am only running WD Greens atm and its been fine so I guess blazing fast write speeds arent essential but 8mbs that the other poster mentioned seems somewhat anaemic. |

Playing over the network from it is no problem either (not transcoding or anything like that) I dont have a gigabit network or anything so I dont think its too much stress for it FWIW I had a hodge podge mix of WD greens in raid 5 previously, also no problem |

Same here. 4 WD Greens in software raid 5 using centos - get avg 60-70MB/sec write speeds and no issues streaming to media box.

Thanks for the feedback on the Raid5 performance guys much appreciated. I'm thinking I will go with WHS11 and Stablebit. The Snapraid approach or simplier duplication with the pooled hard drives seems like it might be better suited as corruption issues and management seem to be quite minimal...I think all my googling of raid5 and the horror stories of what can go wrong have put me off it

took the punt on trying some 16GB kits in the N36L.
I have a couple of N36L's. I purchased 3x Patriot G2 16GB kits from MSY. 1 set worked perfectly in 1 of the N36L's, but not the other N36L. The ram all tested fine in a desktop PC. I could only get 1 set out of the 3 to work properly in the N36L, and it only worked in 1 of the N36L's that I had access to. Returned the ram and got the Gskill 16GB 1333 kits. Worked flawlessly in everything I tried. I's stay away from the Patriot G2 16GB 1333 kit's - they are too hit and miss in my opinion.

I'm slowly adding hdd's to my n36, I currently have my music on one caddy then my HD movies on my HTPC and n36, what do you guys use to bring all files together on the proliant? Any specific app? Ideally I would like to have the n36 as my mass storage back up device but syncing everything can be a bitch.

if its the sff8087, then it has a latch. you might think youve pressed it in but its still catching. wiggle it around a litttle but dont use too much force.

Thanks guys. I eventually got it using an itty bitty screwdriver, I guess in place of the paperclip but I think once I got it out, I could have a closer look and I think I know a bit more how it works now. The two little teeth thing are tricky.
I think I disfigured the housing a little in my attempts but it all seemed to go back together tightly enough. I'll have to go through it all again as one of the RAM modules is not recognising ![]() But working for tonight, thanks again for the help guys! |

Hey guys,
Thanks again for your help so far. Rather than just leech your help and disappear, I thought I'd try and participate a little and 'join the club' so to speak. I bought my N40L a couple of months ago as a HTPC solution to my ever expanding requirements (in my mind at least) for my home media network. On a side note, it's kinda crazy how far I've escalated my home theatre requirements since about Sept last year when I was happy with a WDTV box and a 1TB external drive. I've been having a sh*t of a time with it blue screening regularly but hopefully that problem is now fixed by using some compatible RAM, and I can be a proud N40L owner. My setup is pretty basic to what I've seen in here and in my research over the past two weeks trying to fix this prob! Very cool what some people are doing with this box! My stuff is: N40L Windows 7 Professional SP1 250GB HDD (as supplied) to run OS 2 x 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 7200 - at the moment I'm running JBOD config 8gb Kingston KVR DDR3 2gb Gigabyte AMD 6450 graphics for HDMI video/audio out Some sorta generic DVD RW Server runs XBMC Eden and is connected via HDMI to my Pioneer VSX921 receiver. I've got a Harmony Remote programmed for XBMC and generally I use my laptop to remote control other functions in the server. The IT guys at my work help me set it up but I've learned a lot so I'm now going to start taking matters into my own hands a bit more. I probably don't have a lot left to do with it but now that I've seen what people can do, my eventual hope might be do the thing where you run a SDD in the DVD bay for OS and set up 4 x 2TB in some sort of RAID format so I have a failsafe. At the moment though, until I reach the requirement (and get the cash) for more HDDs, I'm pretty happy! Last edited by BennyB; 29th June 2012 at 1:05 PM. |

Can anyone point me to the dual 3.5" bracket for the 5.25" bay? They're bloody hard to find... Also wtf is with local prices of the Rocket 620 compared to other countries?!
