i ended up with a gigabyte GT620 low profile, but not silent.
It's ok - don't really notice the fan.
Installed drivers from Nvidia's site directly, all working well - i can hear the boss watching something in the front room at the moment

I just got one of these, for some reason it wont talk through my VSX 522 pioneer receiver, it just detects nothing however an ATI based laptop and a WDTV works fine.

I think a problem with the N56L would be the power consumption and heat-

N36L - 12W (1.3GHz) (CPU Benchmark - 805) 67.08 points/W
N40L - 15W (1.5GHz) (CPU Benchmark - 970) 64.66 points/W
N56L - 25W (2.2GHz) (CPU Benchmark - 1,189) 47.56 points/W

I think the N36L to N40L upgrade was still fine with but the N56L is a little low in terms of performance per watt.

^ Going by those figures I'd call the N54L to be an inferior product compared to the N40L

So maybe we will see the N54L selling for $150 ??

According to the HP US web site the N54L should only be about $40 more expensive! Just search for 'N40L' from www.hp.com.

Default Links to BIOS info

Set up a new N40L over the w/e. In the packaging was a sheet detailing important info on 'BIOS Upgrade SOP and Key Creation'.

To prevent server power up failure, see the Customer Advisory BIOS System ROM Update c02903601.
HP recommends that administrators create a BIOS recovery key as a backup. See the Customer Notice BIOS Recovery Key Creation c03026340.

Documented here for the benefit of others - and my future reference

Default Clock Speed

When booting the N40L the speed shows up as being 1500MHz. However on ESXi under the hardware status the Max Clock Speed appears to be 2200MHz. Does anyone have any idea if / how we can make use of the extra 700MHz?

PS It's not a dumb question if you don't know the answer, and I don't!

Informative post, thanks mate. Unless you need the Mhz seems like the NL36 is still a viable option (for those that have them already rather than upgrading).

Would replacing the 40mm psu fan make a considerable difference? I was looking at the pick psu but unsure it will power everything else and worried about heat.

Any particular recommendations for a new 40mm psu fan?

Interesting on the N54L pricing.

Mate just had his iTech non-250gb N40L $219 order cancelled last Thursday (after he purchased Wednesday with site showing in stock ). Anyways they said they couldn't fulfil the order in the future as they weren't receiving any more stock. Make of that what you will.

BUY BUY BUY.

just did mine on the weekend (kenwood receiver).

It took a a bit...but eventually got it to work. Played arond with PC speaker settings. Had to try sending test tones first and that worked...then a restart through just HDMI worked (before i had VGA and then switched to HDMI).

Personally I could do with the extra speed... anything is better for transcoding!
