Default Upgrading DELL Studio 17 (1747) to 16GB of Memory

I have a DELL Studio 17 (1747) and i wish to upgrade it to 16GB of Memory.

My internet research has so far suggested i cannot do this.

My research (typing “1747 max memory” into Google) suggests the best i can have it 2 x 4GB sticks for a total of 8GB (my current configuration).

Can anyone point me to a trust worthy resource which would confirm the 1747 can support 16GB of memory?

If the 1747 can support 16GB of memory where would one source 8GB sticks from? Not an 8GB kit but 2 x 8GB sticks for a total of 16GB.

The Lenovo “W” series allows for 16GB of memory, is this achieved with 4 x 4GB sticks?

I would like the extra memory for virtualisation.

i used to own one of these, a 1745 and from memory the studio 17 can only take 8gb max memory. that is 4gb each slot. this is for the P55 chipset

I just tried myself, putting 16 GB of RAM (Centon DDR3 PC3-10600 2x8GB, 1333 Mhz) in my Studio 1747 laptop, and it doesn't work. RAM is recognized by the BIOS, but throughput goes from 2000 MB/s to 75 MB/s. Windows 7 takes 20 minutes to boot, and the computer is unusable.

Even though the i7 CPU theoretically supports 16 GB, the Dell motherboard doesn't. There is some kind of hardware compatiblity problem which is difficult, if not impossible, to solve. Unfortunately, the BIOS doesn't provide any memory options (voltage, timing, etc.). I have updated to the latest BIOS (A14) and it doesn't work.

If anyone is aware of a solution, I would like to hear it, because I need those 16 GB badly for my many virtual machines.

Thank you!
