At the end of the day, intel make millions of dollars, him rma'ing the chip will not send them broke, give the guy a break, people do make mistakes.

Agree with this. Considering the sandy bridge recall has cost them $1bn to rectify, whats another cpu?

Are we still talking about Intel?

Interesting thread, some interesting attitudes out there. Looks like it boils down to a morality argument. I particularly like this
"An eye for an eye doesn't make the whole world blind, its just karma."
Way to go, combining Christian and Buddhist concepts in a single insult... brilliant.

FYI I work for one of the large, faceless manufacturers, its not Intel but we have a very close relationship with them. I can tell you that a reasonable percentage of RMA is expected and built into the price. You're not hurting Intel in any way, in effect you already paid for the RMA when you paid for the CPU.

On the morality issue, I have to say I find it hard to feel much sympathy when the victim is a multi billion dollar company and the perpetrator is an individual, and an OCAU user

Do the RMA and move on. The day after you wont give it a second thought and neither will Intel.

Unfortunately, NB, these arguments happen all the time whenever someone comes along and says that they're going to RMA.

I don't know whether it's ignorance or what...

Did you actually put "i killed it by overvolting it" into the RMA request...?

That's what I'm wondering. The less information, the better. =\

most likely there is a fuse built into the cpu

from a 2003 intel doc

Quote:
2.7.1 Over Voltage Protection
The VRD should provide over-voltage protection (OVP) by including a circuit, separate from the
voltage sense path, capable of shutting off the output drive when the output voltage rises beyond
Vtrip. If practical, the protection circuit should also enable a low-resistance path to ground such
that if the output transistor shorts to input power the output voltage will not rise above Vtrip. A
non-resetable or resetable fuse
may be included in the input of the VR for this function. The
response time should be such that the output voltage will not exceed (VID plus 250 mV).
so yeah, most likely they can just dump it on a special board that reads a few pins, see if there is any current through it, if not, fuses tripped...overvolting occurred

Edit: and a doc with some eFuse info on 32nm intel chips - http://www.google.co.jp/url?sa=t&sou...DCFLWg&cad=rja

so in other words people will be caught out if they try doing dodgy voltages and try to rma

Ah well, sorry to hear about the RMA rejection, we all make mistakes.
