Apple have done a major crackdown, and have begun restricting developers to pre-registered devices only.

Inside gossip is saying that Steve is furious, and has given the pre-release management team access to the baseband killswitch [1]. He's also insisting they get all legitimate Developer members to re-register all devices before the next beta is released, as well as restrict the number of devices a developer can use for beta testing.

[1] The core baseband chip in the iPhone 3g, 3gs, 4, and all iPads with 3G, have a silicon fuse (ie, on the die itself) that can be blown remotely, effectively destroying the device's ability to use mobile networks and thus bricking the device permanently. Devices not properly (re)authorised with a matching Developer account will be perma-bricked at the end of the current beta period. This should be of no concern to legitimate developers; in the advent that a properly registered iDevice is permabricked, Apple will replace it for free.

Whole-heartedly agree. Whilst Steve may well be furious, permanently bricking devices is a) doubtful in terms of the physical capability and b) hardly likely to work in a practical sense.

I would be more likely to expect that those people selling access to developer accounts for a massive profit (developer access $99, $4 per device, 50 devices per account) will be the ones getting hit, through a simple verification process such as "upload your app for us to check, if you don't then we will cut you and all your registered devices out of the beta". Combining this with beta expiry means that the people who are super keen for a look will realise this is not an appropriate way of doing so.

Yeah, I noticed this the other day. Switch to landscape and you get week view. I am happy now

Getting sick of deleting off-topic posts from this thread. If you want to bitch about Apple's decisions, create a thread and do that, but please don't derail this thread which is about iOS 5.

I can confirm once they are purchased and transferred to the phone they only appear in the ringtone section, NOT the text tone one.

D.
Why would people want to buy ringtones?
Sounds idiotic.

I throw it under fair use - if I have purchased the song, I'll make it a ringtone.

I remember, back in my day, when ringtones had to be keyed in note by note! It was very satisfying spending an evening making Zelda OoT ringtones by ear.

I just want to spread the word to iOS users and especially developers so this does not happen to you:

Apple pilfers rips off student's rejected iPhone app
iOS 5 lifts idea, name, even logo

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/06..._rejected_app/

"Fast forward to Monday, when Apple unveiled a set of new features for the upcoming iOS 5, including the same wireless-syncing functionality. Cupertino wasn't even subtle about the appropriation, using the precise name and a near-identical logo to market the technology."
Na, they didn't steal / borrow off this guy's app, not imo anyway.

Wifi syncing was asked for long before he ever made that app and Apple would've had it planned for some point, and would thus be rejected straight away. Not to mention the developer probably made use of private APIs which Apple says it also an instant rejection.

So, they most definitely didn't steal the idea. The name is too simple to be considered unique, "WiFi" + "Sync" is short and explains what it does. What else would you call the ability to sync wirelessly?

And finally, the logo is probably the most debatable of all of this but the two icons the guy joined together to make his icon already existed in iOS. I don't know whether they did or not, but it's very likely Apple would've been able to do that by themselves had this app never been released.

>>>

Overly, I'm liking iOS 5. I think it's great.

These kinda comments are rare, I'm really happy so far with the features list, but theres always some random crap which other people seem to rant on about.

Sure iOS is kind of restrictive, thats Apple. Still dont get a lot of the negativity.

Workmate of mine had 5 on his iPhone, very impressed with the notification system..
He offered to install it on mine, but I like my JB with 5 icon dock and Tap to Unlock too much!

I'll be looking forward to the tasks app. Probably move all my shit to iCloud so it syncs between my iPad and iPhone4.

Currently running Taskpro which works great on its own, but it doesn't play so nice when syncing across multiple devices.
