Last week my 16Gb 3GS died, I was sittin at the computer waiting for a game level to load, it loaded, i threw the phone on the table (like basically everyone does, only a tiny drop like 5cm at the most onto the back of the phone), screen flickered a few times, dimmed for a second then turned off, never to work again (it was jailbroken, but has been for like 20 out of the 22 months of the life of the phone :P, tried pushing all the buttons, no random sounds like the screen is just dead, tried to get into DFU, it won't charge, not recognised by computer, just completely dead). Anyway, im with Three, phone it out of warranty and my three contracts got 2 months (roughly) left of the 24 month contract. Wondering if i should just take the phone to the three shop and see if it can be repaired, but whats the going rate for repairs these days? do they even do repairs on obviously dead phones like this? i heard they just sell you a refurbished phone? do they do that out of warranty? whats the going rate for those? been looking at buying a Galaxy S II outright but the prices at damn expensive ($850 there abouts +pp, or $650 from UK but UK only warranty and all the complications you get trying to send a mobile phone w/ battery back overseas and crap) so im looking at repairs.....if its hellishly expensive, i might just change to optus and a SGS 2 in a couple of months (or telstra, i heard telstra will have them in august) cheers

They would most likely send you to Apple for repairs, however there are tons of repairers out there who may be able to repair it depending on what exactly you have broken.

ok well not everyone do it, but seriously it was instead of placing it on the table, it was a drop, max of 5cm, but probably more like 2-3cm with a thick rubber case on it, totally didn't expect it to die like this, its not like i throw it every time (though when you see the beating other iphones have taken with destroyed screens/smashed back cases/etc and they still work, yeah it surprised me), only dropped it cause....well my game was ready! lol
Anyway, does apple only offer refurbs if they're under warranty and they can't fix it? or is there a chance, since its gone through three that they might offer a refurb at a lower price if they can't fix? just trying to gauge whether i should waste my time sending it in, or just wait the 2 or so months till the contracts up and switch to a new phone

hmmm i think my nearest app store is in the city though (one in george st isn't there?), wouldn't the 3 store just send it to apple anyway?
ive emailed a few repair places to see if they can do anything but seems like most repairer's do like screens/batteries/buttons and such, not actually fixing of dead phones, so looks like i might have to hit up apple so roughly $250 for a refurb, that'll do me, i got no issue with refurb units
