I decided in the end.. after being disappointed with the announcements and (lack there of) D800 that I didnt want to wait any longer.. and the d700 will eventually be relegated to being my second body. Having said that, it is not like there are any major defects with the d700 that is stopping any photography that I want to do right now.. obviously iso performance doesnt stack up against the d3s but it still performs very well.

Not to mention with the way stock goes.. the price premium for the d800 on release and perceived possible difficulty in getting stock (was hard enough getting a d700).

They are around.. generally used more for couples & weddings etc.. have used the 45mm 2.8 PC-E a fair bit but picked up the 85 so there wouldnt be any overlaps.

Thus far.. loving it.. tricky beast to use.

D90 will still be my seascape camera and ill offload the 17-55 2.8 ED and keep the 10-20mm for it. Just cant part with it.. been such a great camera and my motives for picking up the d700 werent because the d90 was failing in the seascape/landscape department

Nice .. Enjoy the D700. I got mine not long after release after wrangling a deal with the minister..

I have been waiting for the D800 as I want to get a body that does Video, but didn't see the point of going a D3s.

Have been saving my money waiting,waiting... I guess it will come out sometime. May be I should spend my savings on a new lens.. Hmmmm

it would be nice if the D4 does actually come out sometime during my lifetime, though to be honest the main thing i want is a 3rd camera, rather than a better camera... the D3s is faultless in my opinion so im half tempted to just get another one.

what could they make considerably better? more pickles??

This is why I bought my D700 recently as well, the D800 will be around 4k upon release (if you can get one).
I never saw the point of a D3s, it's basically a D700 with a grip.

A D3X, now there's a different body!

I dont see any problem..

As my D700 is only used for amature fun stuff and i take it everywhere, I dont always want to take my Sb800. The popup flash is invaluable .

I will say from my very limited use the D3s felt better in hand than my D700 with grip. But I can take off my grip and put the 50 on and its a great not so big kit that I can carry all day.

IMO direct flash, especially from such a small light source, is a waste of time. It just doesn't look very good.

tbh i wouldnt mind a pop up flash, except that it may make the camera little less durable. but i certainly dont think theres anything wrong with them.

as for the D700 its a killer camera, but its no D3s.

Indeed they are totally different beasts once you put them into action. Love the D3s the only thing is the 'D' pad being so damn far from the portrait shutter button.

I generally have to fire with my middle finger to be able to change focus points with my thumb. Just needs to be a bit more 'in the middle'.

Otherwise.. god damn its fun to use. Would like the AF Assist light on it though.

I've used the flash a couple of times, I was surprised at how nice it was.
That said, I haven't used a speed light yet so don't really know how good flash actually can be.

OT though, I might consider the D800 once it's been out for a year, will still definitely keep the D700 though.
I think resale value of the D700 by then will be pretty week & I'd be better off keeping it.

i dont reckon. 5D1 still fetches high prices, no reason why D700 wouldnt retain value better than DX
