Default eSATA - Are these the steps?

I have an ASRock E350M1/USB3 that has an on board eSATA port running Windows 7 Home Prefessional. I also have an Antec external drive enclosure that has eSATA.

I have enabled AHCI in the BIOS

I have enabled the eSATA port on the motherboard in the BIOS.

These are the steps I have used to connect the drive:
1. plug in eSATA cable to mobo
2. turn on power to external drive enclosure
3. open up storage manager
4. do a scan
5. drive appears

These are the steps I take to disconnect the drive:
1. turn of power to external enclosure
2. unplug eSATA cable

This is what happens:
The drive still appears as being connected. ie it shows in the drive list and also in the file manager

I know that eSATA is not plug and play like USB, but do the above steps look right?

Thanks in advance

This is how I do it.

Software used:

Unlocker
HotSwap!

Steps to recognise drive:
  1. Power drive on and connect to eSATA port
  2. Right-click HotSwap!, scan for hardware changes (saves opening Device Manager or other disk management app)

Steps to disconnect drive:
  1. Left-click HotSwap!, choose drive to disconnect
  2. If it cannot disconnect, generally due to open files on the drive, open up Computer and run Unlocker on external drive
  3. Manually attempt to close offending application
  4. Try disconnecting via HotSwap! again
  5. If it cannot disconnect, perform the same check, this time try selecting Unlock or Kill Process (if not a system process).
  6. Try disconnecting again... etc.
  7. When successful, disconnect eSATA cable and power off drive.

Unlocker is also useful for issues removing other USB devices that claim not being ready to disconnect.

With HotSwap!, other SATA drives may be listed, as I don't think it can distinguish between SATA and eSATA drives. Be sure to disconnect the right drive!
