It's just a shame it's taken this long, as the tablet sys specs are close to being outdated.

i think its more a principle thing now, samsung eventually won out, and this sorta "blocking" others is childish business practice IMO. so im glad that it got through eventually.

Which was the entire point from apples point of view.

I was considering one of these but it lacks SD/USB ports.

The vast majority of tablet consumers don't consider technical specs.

They are irrelevant.

Content and application library, connectivity, ease of use, battery life, weight, responsiveness, build quality, and aesthetics matter.

Thankfully the galaxy tab scores top marks in all those areas. No wonder apple is running scared and still trying to block this soon to be outdated piece of tech.

Yes. Well, half of it is. The other half is gorilla glass.

I can only assume you believe that is a bad thing? Would you care to elaborate?

I have been involved in the design of enclosures for many electronic products. There is nothing wrong with plastic when the enclosure is designed and tested properly. You have to remember that the internal components also add to the structural integrity of the enclosure and help make the whole thing solid and flex free (when it is designed properly).

Plastic feels horrible compared to metal and glass.

It's a compromise on build quality and aesthetics.

Gorilla Glass? That's a type of glass? I thought it was only a company that made borisicate (sp?) glass jewellery.

I would argue the opposite. If I am curled up on the couch with a tablet the last thing i want is a cold hunk of metal (especially in winter).

How do you define build quality? I would define build quality as the ability of the device to perform the function it was designed for over its lifetime.

As for aesthetics that is personal opinion and is not quantifiable, but there are plenty of products out there that are made of plastic and look good. To argue that "plastic products look shit" is just dumb.

EDIT: if the galaxy tab was made of metal you would be waving the "they copied apple" flag. You can't have it both ways.

Gorilla Glass, manufactured by Corning, is an alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass engineered specifically to be thin, light and damage-resistant. Its primary application is portable electronic devices with screens, such as mobile phones, portable media players, and laptop displays
and yes, it is what is used in the GALAXY Tab 10.1. It is not some cheap copy.

It's a function of meterials, finish, fit, tolerance, congruence, uniformity, tactile response and robustness.

You cannot evaluate build quality solely on robustness as you suggest.

Absolutely not. There are frame works for evaluating aesthetics that based on intrinsic human concensuses.

The use of good meterials is not an Apple trade mark or trade dress.
