The aircon is an old box type aircon, my dad had it lying around and i figured he didnt need it. I added the insulation after the sides of the case began to drip with water. the best part was when i moved the aircon and realised it was full of condensation, so i trailed water through the house. The fan mod did electrocute me once , so i proceeded to cover everything that was live with 240v with hot glue. I still have that amp somewhere, i will take a photo of how i ended up running it for 4-5 years after that. (protip. 240v fucking hurts. do not do what i did) There is some other dodgy crap i have done, but i wont go into details unless i can find photographic evidence, as to keep with the nature of the thread. Thats probably the best (worst) though.. |

Lol, gets better and better...
DAD: Where's my aircon unit? And what's all this bloody water everywhere? SCRAD: *innocent face, strolls out of the room, whistling as he goes* You obviously discovered why those units have a drain underneath... ![]() I've been bitten by 240 before too, only a love tap but it still felt like being kicked in the chest by a bloody big horse. It woke me up quick smart, I am always extremely careful working around mains now. It's funny how one little careless move can almost spell disaster, just the other day I was watching my colleague working on an amp (he is a trained service tech who has been doing it for ten years), and he forgot to unplug the mains before poking around inside with a screwdriver. I started to say "hey, that's still live...", but too late. Zap, bang, smoke, lucky it was an insulated screwdriver. He had to have a bit of a sit-down after that...

i ran that aircon like that for about 2 months i think, it was running 24/7. i got the 2.8 up to about 3.5 IIRC. I clearly wasn't paying the power bill. good times.

So tempted to dust off an old machine of mine and make a cardboard case with lots of duct tape.

I decided to add my fans to a passive graphics card. It's a Gigabyte card that came with a bundled game (Neverwinter Nights 2).
![]() ^ I initially had it but never used it. Gave it to a friend for 3 years who used it for gaming but the case had poor airflow so the thermal paste caked on to the heatsink and temps were quite poor. ![]() ^ I recently came back into ownership of the card and attached a slim case fan 12mm thick. Thankfully the fan is very quiet, 1000RPM and wafts air gently over the heatsink. ![]() ^ Initially it was enough but I've overclocked it from the stock (the stock setting was also overclocked). I've also added another fan which is very similar to the new Gigabyte coolers. The temps aren't great but compared to having no fan, it's a dramatic improvement and still EXTREMELY quiet, near silent. My HDD is the most noticable sound in the system now. So I've gone from an 8600GT @ 540/1190/700 to 675/1450/1000 (effectively turning the card into an 8600GTS, without the PCIe power connector). Very happy with the result. Great performance for a card which requires little power and is near silent. With the overclocked setting the card would hit 95+ on load, now it's 70 on load and 50 on idle, all while remaining very very close to silent. ![]() ^ Gigabyte's newer/recent windforce cooler, very similar to my type of set up. Considering I got the fans cheaply off a lovely OCAU member (CM96), I'm extremely pleased.
