My kitten is growing up pretty fast and I had to buy him a bigger litter tray. The problem I am having, is that Gizmo keeps pooping right in the corner and when he tries to cover his mess up, he tears at the bag (tray is in a bag) and when its time to remove the bag, it falls apart.
Any suggestions? I dont want to get rid of the bag because it saves me from cleaning the tray after I chuck the old litter away. I thought I could stop him from doing it by buying a tray with one of those lip things that go around it but still somehow manages to rip up the bag. While I am making this thread, what's a good cat food that will make his poop not smell so bad lol. |

Not sure about the litter. I use one of these http://www.oz-pet.net.au/ and find it easy to clean but doesn't have a bag or anything.
As for the food. A good quality dry food is the best in my experience. I find when my little guy eats wet food it has a worse smell so now i just feed him a dry food that gives him all his nutritional requirements and a can of wet food every now and then for a treat.

I use a covered litter tray, looks like a cat or small dog house, even has a door flap. Great for containing the mess. If you want a little that you can use without a liner, try the silica crystals. It doesn't clump, so it lasts ages. It absorbs liquid and odour, stops the poop from smelling so bad as it has the effect of desiccating the poop. It doesn't stop it from smelling everything out at the time of the incident, but I've accidentally forgot to check the little tray for a week, found several poos in there, dry and hard, and almost no odour.

As to the crystals, some cats (i.e. ours) hate using them and would rather stand beside the tray with their are hanging over the tray to do their business.
I ended up going and trying a few, and have stuck with "Maxes cat litter" since i started giving it a try. i think it is made from sugar cane pulp and as far as our feline cares, is the outright choice. She likes it, it absorbs all the smell (as long as we remain habitual about cleanup) and more than once i've caught her EATING some of the fresh stuff when i've just scrubbed her tray out and laid a new batch. Bonus is it is biodegradeable and you can flush it down the loo (in small quantities) without worry about blocking the pipes. As to the bags, useless, even with trimmed claws she still manages to hack the shit out of it (no pun intended) and i gave up on them very quickly.

I also use the crystals and kitty actually doesnt mind them and they also stop the smell but sometimes he doesnt cover it and it smells pretty bad. I will have a look at the covers with a door as that should stop more of the small escaping and plus wont get crystals flicked everywhere. Stepping on them hurt!
Damn, looks like im not the only one who tried the bag thing and failed lol. |

Ozpet system for sure, it saves you quite a bit of money in the long run and is better than clumping litter and crystals... if you think crystals hurt on your feet? imagine the cats delicate paws

lay several pieces off newspaper on the bottom of the tray and coming up the sides to just above the rim. then lay litter. He might smash away at the newspaper but if you use enough maybe it'll work.

I just dump the home brand litter straight into the tray. Sometimes the tray needs a clean after emptying but running hot water over it is all it needs.

Something I was thinking of doing, was to get one of those lids with a cat door that digamma mentioned, cut a hole into it and bolt in a 120mm computer fan and run it with an old 12v wallplug. Then I can put some ducting on it that goes outside the window kind of like the portable aircons with the exhaust port

Wow that is clever, i am curious about the filter screen size though, as that would be handy for figuring out if your current litter would be suitable.

I have one cat who has to eat by himself in the bathroom, so he has a tray in there. I use the "old news" litter and I have a whole heap of trays. The recycled newspaper litter can just be chucked into the compost bin or on the garden and I can just leave the tray out in the garden and use a clean one. Squirt them out with the hose on the weekend.
