This is about PCIe x2 performance but it still shits all over the GT330M. $85US Everything you need to know is here... http://forum.notebookreview.com/gami...periences.html WARNING its not a simple plug n play affair. You have to do a fair bit of driver hacking and bios hacking to get it to work for some systems, particularly for the Vaio Z because of it's gay Hybrid graphics and Sony's slack video driver support!

A gtx580 is marginally faster than the 560TI which is the best bang for your buck. I just happen to have my cards lying around while I rebuild and wait for blocks. I'll probably replace it with a 570 or 560TI if I can find one.

does it only allow output to the external screen? if so then
Edit: If only it could output to the laptop screen... would make a fantastic lan setup, make a little external enclosure that housed the GPU on the pcie PCB, maybe a few HDD's in there through eSATA or something. Its not so much the suers fault as it is the laptop maunfacturers, when will laptops start coming out with video input/output as a standard? I mean Ive seen a few laptops around that have HDMI in on them....

You mean something like this? Its on the to do list after I finish rebuilding the main system. The external board has a USB port so technically you could put a USB drive inside the case with it.

For those wondering what real world performance is like.
In Crysis 2 DX11 Ultra pak @ 1920x1080 I get min 24fps avg 35fps outdoors and 50FPS indoors. Compared with the GT330M struggling to do 20FPS on lowest settings @ 1600x900! My favourite flight sim gets 50FPS compared to 3FPS with the GT330M. 18K Vantage compared to a desktop GTX580 @ 24k.

Yes it renders to internal LCD but only on Nvidia Optimus capable laptops with the integrated Intel HD GPU. This site above gives all the info and options. Even without the Intel HD GPU you can still plug the external GPU into a monitor.

And just to put that into perspective, my built in so called dedicated GT330M does Vantage P1825 and 5fps vs 18900 and 55fps for the external GTX580.. Thats a 1000% (10x) increase in performance.

can you do it with an ATi/AMD card? ATi/AMD cards get affected less by PCIE bandwidth drop
