Lightbulb Apple iPhone '4S' Announced | Dual Core, iOS5, 8MP, 1080p Rec, 14.4Mbps HSPA+...

Release date in Australia: October 14th~

Quote:
The second coming of the iPhone 4? Sure enough, Tim Cook just pulled the covers off of the hotly-anticipated iPhone 4S here in Cupertino. On the outside the 4S looks exactly like its predecessor, but on the inside it's "all new." Apple has jammed a dual-core A5 CPU inside alongside a new dual-core GPU that supposedly boosts graphics performance by up to 7x. Up front is the same Retina display we've all come to know and love, and a glass back. That antenna around the sides (which caused many users so much trouble) has been revamped and can intelligently switch between two different sets of anntenae on the fly to avoid dropping calls based on how you hold it. Those antennas are connected to a dual-mode GSM and CDMA radio that will let Apple's handset roam the globe while enjoying either 14.4Mbps HSPA+ or EVDO.

On the back is also a new camera that sports an 8-megapixel camera with a backside illuminated CMOS sensor for better low-light performance. The lens also now packs an IR filter and a new assembly for apertures down to f/2.4. The improved visuals extend to video performance as well. The 4S can record 1080p video and has a new image signal processor for image stabilization and facial recognition.

As far as battery life, you're looking at eight hours of talk over 3G, and 14 hours of 2G, while web browsing over 3G cuts off at six hours. Using WiFi you'll get a respectable nine hours of web, video playback tops out at 10 hours and music at 40 hours.

It's a pretty lame update after 16months.

As expected it's really just updates rather than new features, the smartphone market is improving so fast, the iPhone needed to keep up. The voice thing looks interesting but it's just what Android has already.

Same here, but then again Apple tend to release a new design every two iterations. New design, then same design with new hardware, and then new design comes along.

Or the rumours could have been right with regard to the iPhone 5 having overheating issues..oh well.

I'm consistently surprised by the performance that phone manufacturers get from them without overheating. Sure, some phones have had trouble with heat, but considering the 3d graphics of some apps I'm amazed that they don't need heatsinks with fins.

While I'm not surprised I'm extremely disappointed. I may as well replace the cracked screen on my 3GS and replace the battery.

I'm sure ios5 will make my 3GS run even worse now.

fuck you apple

The release date is October 14th also, not the 28th. Thankfully Australia is finally going to be in the first roll-out

i know most people are disappointed, but just think about all the people who want to upgrade to an iphone 4 now and now have another option - not everyone could have afforded an iphone5 now, or want android.

canadians will pay GST & HST on top of that amount (13% in ontario, varies across states) so that brings it upto $733 anyway

From what I know, the prices for apple products on the canada website does NOT include an additional sales tax of some sort, so you actually have to pay a bit more, which will potentially put it just close to your RRP listed there, so no need to feel jipped.

Not feeling jiped at all, I bought my 4 in Canada almost exactly one year ago and paid my HST etc, but it was still cheaper compared to the AU store. I feel more upset that there is basically no justification for this price level after such a stellar year for the AUD, all the phones get shipped from the same location (China) There shouldn't be such a disparity in price considering it used to be the cheapest place to buy apple products, reversing dollar should have kept it that way.

Correct Falkor, I am currently in NY and it is a good time to be ordering products online with free 2 day shipping
