I will have to see how this shapes up... I used to use the 6-monthly releases but ended up jumping on the LTS bandwagon with 10.04, which I still run to this day on my Desktop and Server. 10.04 has been very good to me, and I like it as a release.

I have been keeping my eye on Fedora, which in my mind has been becoming more and more user-friendly and a well-supported distro.

I agree with Xenix in regard to Ubuntu losing the plot. In my mind, the mimicry of a significant proportion of OSX features/design is not innovative (LHS window controls, global menu bar, hidden scroll bars, etc) - and additionally - forcing new interfaces onto people when they are not even complete is not the way to do things IMO (Unity).

Personally on my computer, I use a dock and run an OSX icon set. Why? A dock is admittedly a good way of task launching/management and unfortunately I can't find any nice looking but complete icon sets for GNOME.

That said - I don't feel for a global menu bar, hidden scroll bars or inverted (to the PC norm) window controls. I've had a rant about this in another thread... less is more for UIs in my opinion.

It will be interesting to see how things go. A software dev at work has shown me how advanced KDE 4.x is compared to GNOME 2.x and even 3.x (since it is neutered) and i have to admit I did like most of what I saw...

I still get confused when people get really upset about something in a land of choice, it makes it seem like ubuntu with unity is the only usable linux desktop out there, to the point it even ignores Xubuntu and Lubuntu and Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Crunchbang etc

It is a shame there really is no alternative to ubuntu in the linux world at the moment. Fedora is too FOSS focussed (and one might argue bleeding edge, but thats getting much better each release imo), and opensuse is somewhat stuck in a development stagnation. Sure, you can customise (any) of the OS's to get it up and running, but Ubuntu is the closest linux turnkey OS out. And I believe its this position which is causing sometimes questionable decisions to come from the steering committee.

I would agree, but as derivatives they don't get the amount of support or focus as the primary release (kubuntu) or dont have the resources (linux mint). Like I said, nothing to stop you from running something else to your liking, just nothing else is as turn key.

I've set up one business where their SOE was the latest Kubuntu LTS. It was exceptionally "turn key" for them, and their staff much preferred it to GNOME or Unity desktops.

Xubuntu was as close to a 'turnkey OS' as Ubuntu for me.

There were certainly some things that were tricky (eg. getting the OmniVision OV534 driver to work properly) but all the problems I hit were ones that affected Ubuntu too.

Unity’s Application Lens is pretty much perfect: you can search apps by text, or by category.

Simple stuff, right?

Well it’s not simple enough for those who prefer the more traditional approach to application-menu structure.

To that end the maintainer of the Unity Application Lens, Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen, has put together an GNOME Menu inspired alternative. A lens he’s called ‘Unity Bliss’.

The Bliss Lens takes things old-skool: organising applications into category folders reminicisnt of the old GNOME 2 menus.

Each application category is a folder. Inside each folder lay the respective application icons.

If you're feeling bored the whole session was recorded:

If I understood it correctly in the future there will an option to trial wayland and then go from there, but yeah long way off.

Exactly. It is ridiculous to complain about a lack of choice when it comes to linux distros, in this case its even more ridiculous because there are so many excellent 'sub-distros' of Ubuntu for people to choose from.

Precise Pangolin, according to Shuttleworth, will be – as the name implies – the most perfect Ubuntu release so far, making it ready for large-scale deployments.

Here's a list of all the goodness you can expect from Ubuntu 12.04 that will be released in late April next year:
Quote:
1. Kernel 3.2
2. 64-bit by Default
3. No more CDs
4. Rhythmbox makes a comeback
5. Way to Wayland
6. So long Mono (hopefully)
7. Faster Software Center
8. Better Unity
9. LightDM gets more personal
10. Better icons
11. Privacy
12. GNOME 3.2

For Ubuntu 12.04 a ‘shortcut overlay hint‘ will appear on screen when the Super key (Aka ‘Windows key’) is pressed and held. The overlay presents a list of key-combos for accessing and navigating various Unity features.
nice!

Some pretty boot speed charts.

Looks like they're trying to get her back down to under 10 seconds when ubuntu 10.04 was released.
