Looking at an after market cooler for my 2500k, obviously Noctua is pretty much #1 as far as Air Coolers are concerned, but im a little skeptical about hanging 1kg+ off the motherboard... Is there much risk in the heavy heatsinks? i could just get the coolermaster 212 which is only 626g..

It should include a backplate, to spread the load and make the MoBo a bit more rigid. It'll be fine while it's standing there - but you'll need to lay the computer down if you transport it (to a LAN or something).

i wouldnt bother...plus the 212 evo is a fair bit lighter than the noctua/TRUE heavyweights that sparked this original concern.

Well, I would...even if you're moving yourself you couldn't guarantee that you won't come to a sudden halt in a vehicle and throw some stuff around sharply - it doesn't take a great deal of time to remove/reinstall and it's good peace of mind whilst moving, imho.

Just the the computer on it's side, and make sure it's packed so it doesn't slide around. I had one of those massive Zalman HSFs back in the day (first one with heatpipes), and I never had a problem.

I think i'll just have it lying on its side in the box...That should be enough protection.

I have a Xigmatek Balder which weighs 700g with an extra 115g fan attached. Never had a problem with it on my P35-DS3P even when moving around. Regarding the Hyper 212, just make sure the computer is laid on its side (motherboard side to the floor).
I would take the Noctua off though. That thing is HUUGE.

I have a noctua NH-D14 and i've transported it (case laying down) and its been fine. Mind you, it is a massive chunk of metal.

No, but you have the inconvenience of a massive Rad, like with the H100
