And this is why it isn't going to be a GTX 660 or 660 Ti.

Planning a new PC. Torn between the 7970 and 680.

The way I understand it is, GENERALLY:
GTX680 > HD7970
GTX680 OC < HD7970 OC
GTX680 SLi < HD7970 Crossfire

Any objections to this?

I don't usually OC my video cards, as they always seem to be pushed to the limit out of the box. Not saying that I'm not interested if they can be overclocked though...

I am interested in Dual cards though. I was thinking of buying one now, and one later.

Hey Matey,

Been down the track of crossfire 7970's and sli 680's in last few months, i would have to put my vote in for 680's

It's just a quieter smoother experience with nvidia, less driver issues. In gaming it's roughly the same i'd say depending on OC or game but i will point out i noticed a improvement in image quality going to the 680's.

On the other hand, you could buy a cheap 7970 on the forums and an even cheaper one down the track and have crossfire for a good few hundred dollars less if your on a budget

More like:

GTX680 > HD7970
GTX680 OC ~= HD7970 OC
GTX680 SLi > HD7970 Crossfire

Hey scotteee did you find any difference in image quality between 7970 and 680? I have seen this mentioned elsewhere but this factor hardly gets mentioned when guys are undecided which to buy because benchmarks are close. In my opinion, in changing directly from 7970 to 680 - the 680 LOOKED amazing, while the 7970 did not!!!

Can anyone else share a similar experience?

I'll agree with you 100% aussie, i thought i may have been seeing things!

this article seems to support what we saw

We did, in fact, find texture quality anomalies in AMD's new Radeon HD 7000 series, and we were originally concerned that history was repeating itself when we discovered the problem. If you've paid any attention to the graphics space over the past 10 years, you'll probably remember a time when ATI and Nvidia quietly played around with image quality, sacrificing visual fidelity for performance in order to help their products perform better in high-profile game benchmarks.

These image quality issues have been rectified in the newest driver release.

Your going to get a lot of GTX680 suggestions posting in the nVidia GTX680 thread but the GTX680 is the superior card. I would suggest the 680 if budget isn't a big concern but the 7970 can be found for ~$450-$500 on the For Sale forums and for ~$600 new where as the 680 cant be found anywhere (and when you can find it they're $700+).

In terms of game performance they are incredibly close and if your on a single monitor you really wont notice the difference. If you need something now, for cheap, the 7970 can be found easily but if you just want the 'best' card then the 680 wins hands down.

So... decided on the GTX680. Went to place order for whole system. Decided to do a check on availability on all my parts - and found no GTX680s were available. Damnit
