Mine was two weeks old but with Evga warranty it's all good, I'm onto a second one now but it's a little dearer. I really want a Lightning (or a CuII)...

680 prices are getting better now, finally getting down to RRP area (and less for used)

Its up to you but I dont really think there will be a huge difference between any of them, if your not overclocking then factory clocks may help, some prefer the Gigabyte multi fan cooler, some prefer external exhaust.

Well, got a new SSD and a fresh Windows install running the 304.79's and the method used to overclock these cards is boggling my brain.

So far, the highest observed clock speed is 1228mhz on the core and 3110 on the mem with temps no higher than 62 degrees - Bearing in mind that I have no idea what I'm doing!

The improvement to BF3 is amazing, I can now run all settings on high, FXAA on high, MSAA on 2x, FXAA on 16x and HBAO enabled and I get frame rates of around 55 - 85fps in my TDM maps at 5760 x 1080....

....To say that's an improvement over my old GTX570's is an understatement.

I've noticed that if you crank the clocks too high on the mem you get a microstutter type effect in BF3 and virtual memory issues that cause the system to drop out of Aero desktop?

Still rocking x58/i7 920 @ 4.0 NSanity, when I sell my 570's I'm gonna upgrade to a newer platform, although the good 'ol x58's still holding in there, especially considering the pixels I'm pushing!

I don't have a storage IO issue, it just seems to be an issue with the drivers, others have complained about the same problem further back in the thread.

an IO storage thing is usually either the HDD or the cable connections.

EDIT: downloading the latest beta drivers and see how they fair over the 304.48 betas.

I don't have a storage issue, I've mearly observed the 'out of resources' issue you described.
