Fermi was/is a good arch at the time/now.... go back look at my posts defending it against the hordes of GPGU killing graphics performance.....

notice i haven't commented on Fermi either, but what you said above is wrong....

its just that simple.

the only way you could be right is if scientific/business gpgpu computing had the same requirements as a heavy shader graphic pipeline. but this is not the case.

edit: (graphics shaders are basically a special case of gpgpu application)

WTF are you on about, an ALU is an ALU. AMD do DP FMA over 16 cycles per 1 D shader vs 4 cycles per per MADD in SP. there is zero overhead in the shader pipeline from DP Compute. But there is always benefit from better memory and cache architecture especially from performance and power perspective.

I think he is just saying he doesn't care about Compute, OpenCL, CUDA etc he buys graphics cards for gaming.

And in his earlier comment I think he was getting at that if nVidia and AMD are shifting more to general purpose then gaming performance would take a back seat.

So basically GPGPU = Jack of all trades but master of none

except all those really cool algorithms that make games look really good like DOF, AO , AA , GI etc run like shit on DX9 aka not compute hardware.

The 7970 hasn't gone backwards and it was GPGPU focused, same with Fermi.

So really, I can't see any problem with GPGPU being the focus.

But the problem is this will place a lot of emphasis and demands on the software firmware as such that runs all the graphical operations in the cards.

No longer will there be fixed function hardware, it'll all be running via firmware/drivers. This may be a good thing but what if there are software 'bugs' or other such issues? Not a fun thing to have to fix And moving too much into the CPU/driver side of things will remove the benefits of having a GPU.

It's a bit of a balancing act I suppose...

the rumors have been very strong for a while that nv's first line up of 28nm parts aren't going to be kepler but rather 768/1024 core fermi's.

just fyi the push back isn't really news or surprising at all
