    bit a programming n00b

Here's a project on github, very simple code (assuming it works)
How do I compile it? run it etc. Where do I put my inputs?

I have a laptop here, with a win7 key that is half faded. The idea is to input the known characters, and get the program to generate all the possible combinations. Then input that text file into another program PIDGEN which will confirm the correct key.

It's a php script. You'd edit it where it says in the scripts with your known values, then just run "php gistfile1.txt" in the console whilst in the same directory. This assumes php is in your path.

Obviously if you dont have php installed, you'll need to install it and add it to your path

You need to install php in your path so you can run it from the command line.

Depending on what the program does you could run it in a live editor like this:

Thanks guys. I got the script to run.

I installed PHP for windows into C:\PHP\ and just copied the scripts into that path

    so I run

    CD\ PHP
    PHP.exe input.txt > output.txt

Haven't found the valid key yet though :(

Do you have an old install? You can extract the key from the registry. What script doesn't say what version of windows the generator is for.

Are you manually trying them all by hand?

It looks like it's generic, all it does is loop through all the places in the key and prints all the possible keys for places where you subsititute a character with an array of what you think it might be.

I can't see the script ever working to be honest. Possibly a case of wishful thinking perhaps?

As others have said, there are free tools for extracting the CD Key from the registry. Although, I'd use caution because some have been known to pinch the bloody things.

If you are using Windows 8.1 or 10, you only need to use the CD Key once, after that the key is stored at MS and is associated with your hardware system ID and Microsoft account - just click continue or whatever the button says when prompted, and log into Microsoft when prompted later in the install.

I probably should mentioned something important in that last post of mine... You need to have an MS account active and working for it to work.

Ummm its a php script you can run it any where, and all it does is makes a list of all the possibilities to a key where you are unsure of some characters, it will work as it doesn't generate a key, it prints possible keys based on your guesses.

I think you are going about it the wrong way

Magic Jelly Bean should retrieve a windows key.

Otherwise. For a notebook it could be a generic SLIC key. What brand and windows edition is it?

Can't retreive key from the registry. HDD died. And it's a windows 7 laptop. So the sticker is the only source of the key.

They script appears to work. And is very quick. But the Key verifiying program I am using is too slow on the PCs here at work. Takes between 1 & 30 seconds to reject a key. Unfortunately the sticker is just too worn 1 character is missing completely and about half of the letters can be misinterpretted.

This has been something I've been after for a long time, It's another tool/technique to add to the arsenal.

Good for those stickers that have a couple of characters that are hard to read.

Its like $25 to buy Windows 7. If you value your time just buy it?

    edit: $17 to buy here

    Duh. :D

The script does work, I've been playing with it. The output isn't very useful for guessing license keys (unless your meant to replace the X's with a partial key, which is possibly the point anyway).

Sorry, I didn't realise the extent of your predicament.

If the key is not VLK (which may be why your script is failing) - this is worth a shot. Slave the hard disk so the app can dig out all they keys on the drive.

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

edit: it will set off every virus scanner known to man, so if that bothers you, slave the drive to a junk pc and run it from there.
