I started reading that and thought 'YES! Back to the roots' ... then read '40 basic units'. 40.

The original had what, 9? 10? It provided plenty of depth.

If you've got 40 units, they can hardly all have some 'clear purpose'.

Maybe. But they haven't fucked up any of them yet, so we can only hope it'll be good.

Jeff van Dyck is working on the soundtrack too. He's a legend.

I almost had a joygasm reading this, but that 20 basic units per faction blue balled me.

I really hope that's including upgrades for a limited set of unit types like the original.

I preferred STW over MTW because of it's smaller scope and things like the harvest reports made it more engaging, so it sounds promising.

Sounds great. Lets hope it does go back to its roots a little as the last few havent really been as good/as satisfying imho.

    omg. SUPERNINJAS/GEISHAS!

How i loved having a dozen shinobi houses generating about 100 shinobi's to infiltrate enemy territory.

    and geishas... :D

20 units won't be so bad, particularly if most of them are unique to specific factions. It would make it a bit more interesting. Plus, it looks like ships will be there too so that's probably a dozen or so units

It wasn't as good as the others, but it definitely wasn't a 'fuck up'.

You never get tired of playing with 1 province vs all the other factions. :)

The thing i found with shogun is didnt get bored even after finishing the game with every faction. The scope was far more manageable then say NTW.

I would say in games completed and hours spent (in this order)

    M2tw
    Shogun
    MTW
    Rome
    empire
    Ntw

To be honest i can't play any total war unmodded except shogun and mtw1.
Also m2tw is only played more because it has some massively awesome mods such as

    Call of warhammer (Warhammer fantasy)
    Stainless Steel
    Third Age (LOTR)

Was saying to my brother when Napoleon came out that I hope they do a sequel to Shogun. Was glad to see it announced. Now that they have 2 studios making TW games they sure can pump them out eh?
