Just speakers + sub? have an amplifier already? What type of music? What is the size & shape of the room?

"Best" is very subjective and changes from person to person depending on the sound characteristics they enjoy more.

I got myself a pair of KRK Rokit 6's, the 10S sub and an asus essence one, all fits under 1.5k.

I would go the route of studio monitors since you have a large enough budget with a dedicated amp. I went balanced XLR connectors with USB hence the essence one, but if your happy with RCA (if you have a neatly organised desk with no cable mess) then you could divert funds away from the amp to the speakers.

    Thought id chime in.

Im running the following and its really awesome:
    Xonar D2x from PC

    Swan T200B monitors
    SVS PB1000 Sub.

Running it in a 3x4m bedroom atm, and its significant overkill. Sub easily compresses the whole room even at 'night appropriate volumes'
