my understanding is that a 2.5" hard drive use the same sata port as the 3.5" sata right?

now I purchased a 2.5" enclosure from msy for a quick way to connect my sata dvd-rw to my laptop (which doesnt have a dvd drive) and then later buy a 2.5" hdd and use it as an external.

I cannot connect my 3.5" sata cable into the port for the 2.5" as it is much smaller. I'm wondering if they sold me an IDE or pata one eventhough i paid for a sata one and is there a way to convert it from 3.5" to 2.5" cable that I can use if the 3.5" and 2.5" sata are different.

im trying to put a 3.5" sata cable that u connect normally to a sata based dvd-rw or 3.5" hard drive which in my case is a 640gb western digital that u connect to the motherboard to a product that I brought from MSY Technology which is a 2.5" Mesh SATA enclosure by Ritmo.

    Specifically

Ritmo 2.5" CE-2541 MESH SATA to USB2.0 Ext. Enclosure.

but the connector on the Ritmo 2.5" Sata side is too small.

after i use it for a dvd thingy I will be buying a 320gb 2.5" Samsung which should connect directly but atm I dont think it can if 2.5" and 3.5" drives use the same SATA connector

    any help Thanks

the connector is correct, but i havbe nfi how youre going to physically get it on the back of a dvd drive as its flat on the pcb of the enclosure.

they arent made for sata cables, at least normal ones, theyre made to hook directly to the back of the drive. you will need a sata extension cable, ie male to female, not male to male.

You can use 2.5" SATA HDDs in devices designed for 3.5" ones, but not the other way round.

2.5" SATA devices use a well-defined layout for the connectors (so everything lines up nicely in situations where there's a rigid connection between the drive and the laptop) and only need the 3.3V and 5V power supply lines.

3.5" SATA devices don't use a well-defined layout (because they'll virtually always be used with a cable) and require a 12V power supply too.

The 2.5" case definitely won't be able to handle a CDRW drive. The drive will draw far more power than USB can provide, and the case won't provide a 12V rail either.

Regarding SATA/PATA: laptop PATA looks just like desktop PATA, but smaller and with four extra pins. If the connector on the case doesn't look like that, it's not PATA.

I will be using my desktop 4 pin molex connection to draw power. I just need the 2.5" to channel the data from a dvd-rw to a usb since MSY ran out of a sata to USB converter so im improvising.

Ah, right. In that case, what terrastrife said is the most relevant thing. You essentially need a SATA extension cable rather than a normal SATA cable.

MSY dont sell the component as far as I can tell. Also how much do these things cost and where is a place that supplies it in Sydney. Best to be on the North Shore.

dont think ive seen a fem-male sata cable...

and being an enclosure even if the connector fits onto the back of the drive, dont see how u can power it with an external molex?
