Hi Guys have been playing around with RAID 5 on ICH10R.

I had two VR in RAID 0 on ICH10R and system was very speedy but it seems I have some stuttering like SSD issues now that I am running 4 on RAID 5. Maybe I am maxing out the chipset? Might have to go for a dedicated RAID card. I was just after your thoughts / ideas... :D

I get better results using five plain jane old Seagate 'Cuda drives in a RAID-5.

As to maxing out chipset, probably!

Here is a screenie from HD Tune Pro. It shows the lag spikes. In games some times I miss about a second of game play and hear the drives thrash. I might wipe this volume and try the drives in RAID 0 to see if a plain stripe without the parity info reduces the overhead on the chipset.

Thanks for the info Saba. Do you have a image of your drives performance? Do you like your RAID card? If you were to buy another would you get the same card? How much time does it add to boot? Sorry for all the questions :)

While the graph is more consistent, you'd really see some solid gains with a good hardware raid controller. Considering the PC in your sig, i think a nice raid controller would compliment the VelociRaptors :D That is if you really need the speed.

Example, while RAID0 proves to be similar to your results (speed), you can see RAID5 shining with a raid controller.

for 4 velociraptors in raid 0 - i expected a hell of alot better. Try a dedicated card IMO. A 8x pci-e Adaptec 5805 or something should be better results.

No picture handy, but I can give you numerics if you'd like.

The adaptec is fine and does everything I ask of it.

I bought this particular card since I couldn't source an LSI 8888ELP or Areca card for a reasonable price.

It adds about thirty seconds to boot as the onboard kernel initialises.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Very much appreciated  I have read through links posted. Lots of good info.

Spent a bit more time yesterday with real world tests and I have seen a very big increase with the extra two drives in RAID0. Windows boot time and game loads are much faster. I have not seen any of the stuttering effects that I had with RAID5.

I will take your advice and look for a RAID card on the forums here. I have noticed a member has been selling PERC6/i (Dell) cards here ($300). Has anyone had any experience with them?

I've also just picked up a PERC5/i. Planning to do RAID10 across 4x Raptor 74GB's. Will be interesting to see how it performs.
