I have a Sapphire HD 7970 3GB reference design card.

I play a lot of NBA 2K16 and the card started acting funny- extreme slowness in menus, some of which are rendered, some are just 2D, impossible to even get into a game.

I thought it was dying, so I purchased Sapphire HD 7970 3GB Dual-X OC.

I've been playing NBA with the Dual-X card and other games for months now- most recently No Man's Sky and Fallout 4 and forgot all about the original reference card.

Out of interest I took the Dual-X out and put the reference card in... the reference card played No Man's Sky and Fallout 4 perfectly fine.. hours without any issue.

As soon as I fired up NBA 2K16, it did it slow thing again.
Same drivers, same hardware setup, same underlying gpu.

Tried a google and more concerning glitches with the NBA 2K16 itself (which should be universal to all cards/setups.. not just a specific one?)

Other hardware- G1 Sniper M5 Motherboard and Intel i5 4590 and otherwise pretty normal system.

What is going on? any thoughts appreciated.

What driver version are you on?
Im running a 7950 and ever since the Crimson drivers came out my life has sucked when it comes to in game performance so i've rolled back (a fair way) and resolved 90% of my issues

    *edit*
    what are your thermals like?

put the latest drivers on for this experiment. can try a rollback.

Will check the thermals, but shouldn't be an issue if i can game for hours on end with other games?

    Will try this tonight.
But it doesn't really explain why one 7970 is ok and the other isn't?

Only reason i mentioned thermals is because of the Crimson drivers, when my card hits 80'c (which is very often) it drops my clock speed to lower the temps (safety feature) but still shouldn't impact as bad as you described.

Wild random question (just roll with it lol) are you using something like phone or data hotspot as tethered internet?
context - Borderlands 2 has a bug where when it detects an NDIS device on your computer it dropped frames to 1fps regardless of any graphics settings in game for some strange reason
