ok guys i have a x670 board and 7900x cpu in my sig rig and im tossing up wether or not to upgrade.
i run windows 10 and not keen on win 11.
    so running 5k with a 4090 should i upgrade ?
nothing is slow but i like upgrading but not if its not worth it with windows 10 for cpu parking.
the other option is 7950 for a small core bump and to scratch the upgrade itch for small $
so would you bother or not ?
i do need to upgrade my ram to around 64 gig of faster clocked stuff thats low profile to fit under my cooler.

If the board is compatible, upgrade if you want to.

I would go 7800X3D though, lots of people grabbing the 9800X3D so many 2nd hand 7800X3D's available.

So you have to remove the cooler to install the new ram? You may as well install a new cpu while you have the cooler off :)

    9800 isnt 60% better than 2nd hand 7800($500 vs $800)
Granted if new, you probably want the 9800
OP, don't think there's any cpu parking with a single CCD 9800.
You won't see much if any improvement at 5K
    Worth waiting for 9950X3D Jan/Feb i think?

7800X3D will be a massive downgrade in any other tasks but gaming.
To be honest, I probably wouldn't upgrade anything.

This question is unanswerable without knowing your use case.

What do you do with your computer?

    Productivity? Specify applications.
Gaming? Specify genre, competitiveness and resolution preference.

OP, do you self a favour & get use to win 11, 10 is losing support next year.
Core parking can be solved permanently with the right cmd prompts. I've done it & reap the benefits.

Don't think the OP mean't that. Sounds like a similar scenario that I've had with a tower cooler, just remove the front fan on the HS & reseat it when the new ram is in is what I think he means.

i have been too lazy to upgrade to windows 11 because i have to wipe everything due to running legacy mode for my ssd's.
i think i will swap to a quick 48gb kit of ram and 9800x3d in the next couple of weeks.
thankyou all for the input !

9800x3d is a decent chip, it's hexy atm, but it's faster than the 7800x3d, has strong 1% lows, and unlike last generation, it's 8 core performance is better than the stock 8 by approx 8%.

I'm sitting on 5700X3D and made the switch. Paid too much but the way I see it AM5 will be around for a few years to come so it's only a matter of time. Might aswell drop the coin and enjoy the frames as there's always something newer and faster on the horizon.

Keen on your thoughts mate, be good to see you add to The Beast's thoughts on the jump when you guys get the time. I'm on a 5800X3D and will likely look at a platform or GPU upgrade at tax time

ok it was a rocky start.
    bios updated already.
booted and c.o.d locked up constantly couldnt even click on a match and after many reboots messing with settings and clearing cmos for about an hour its stable.
unsure what setting it was that gave me grief but alot of people are having this issue from my googling.
running sweet now but makes me a little scared to mess with it again tbh.

Did you re-train your RAM after putting the new kit in mate? I've found my early experience with DDR5 to be:

    - Put the kit in
    - Boot
    - Wait at black screen (sometimes with RGB on, sometimes off) for about 10 mins.
    - Machine resets
    - Win

I even seemingly had to do this after swapping sticks in slots for the machine to settle. It did take some time, and it was not high-performance RAM

    @ hairy,
yeah, first couple of boots take a long time.Assume you got EXPO ram?
Once youre happy with settings, and its stable
    dram settings>memory context restore>enable
AFAIK this stops it memory training every boot, reduces boot time significantly
