A few things with Windows and hard drives

    How do I do an external chkdsk and run memtest, this comp only has one ram slot.

    an external checkdsk would require an external caddy or dock and a seperate system to run the chkdsk on (so you know for sure it's not system related).

    memtest? you just run memtest from a cd/dvd or USB stick (usb is the easiest way for sure) if it doesn't error out then all good, if it does, find another ram stick to test or buy a cheappie from MSY or umart or something.

    Chkdsk ok, memtest ok. I tried something else, I have a Toshiba netbook also, so I swapped the hard drives between it and the Asus. The Toshiba one worked ok in the Asus, so I put the formatted Asus one in the Toshiba and was able to load Windows 7 on it. I returned it to the Asus and it started ok with no "bootmgr" missing. I did a reinstal via the ext drive and it's all ok. I'll never know what the problem was but I'm happy the it's all working ok. Thanks everyone for there input on this problem.
