I'm fortunate enough to do a dozen or so destination weddings a year. They're a lot more difficult as you're foreign to the area as well as not knowing what to expect. You know the photos are exceptionally important to the clients, otherwise they wouldn't fly you all the way overseas to cover it. So the pressure is always on...

I shot this wedding in Pai, Thailand, mid November and I've just finished editing the set. Pai is a small, sleepy town two hours drive north of Chiang Mai - a bit of an epic trip just to get there, even by plane. It's not your typical Thailand town... totally devoid of all the sleeze with heaps of hippy tourists just doing literally nothing all day. During the day it's all about lazing around and in the evening there's nothing much else to do apart from going to one of the few bars around with surprisingly decent live music, only to be kicked out by 1am. All the bars have a small campfire where we sat around and met other tourists (mostly backpackers) and just chatted about life.

I remember going to a coffee shop that literally only had ONE table. It was aptly called "Cofee table". I thought this coffee shop pretty much sums up this quaint little town.

Anyway, destination weddings is all about trying to take photos to characterise the location/destination. So I do a fair bit of street level stuff to try and reflect on what the town represents to the couple. I hope you can see it in this set.

    I really like 14 and 22.

Like you said, with destination weddings, its important to capture the feel of the place, and you've done a good job of that.

I'm just wondering, when doing destination stuff, do you travel light or do you bring you're usual full set of gear? baggage handlers can't be trusted, and there's only so much you can fit in your carry on luggage.

holy shit. I can easily see why people will fly you around the place to shoot their wedding

Very nice set. Can definitely sense the mood of Pai even though I've never been.

the telephone booth was cool as... with a mountainous backdrop. can't ask for much more.

cheers :) Every destination wedding presents itself in a slightly different way, and it's an awesome challenge, rather than the repetitive local ones that's done week in and week out.

i bring a lot less gear. Everything fits in the backpack - a minitrekker. D3 + 24-70 and D3s + 70-200. As there were two of us with identical gear each, I didn't have to worry about backup lenses (but otherwise I'd bring a 50 and 85/105 prime just in case).

haha  sounds cool but i'm not booking as many overseas weddings anymore as my daughter is getting into her toddler months and I want to be home more often.

cheers buddy. My impression of Pai = hippies, bicycles, doing nothing (with nothing there), clean town, laid back, VW kombis and old cars, non-westernised, and cheap as. It's however apparently changed a lot in the last 5 yrs with a few developments being built.

    Texture, mostly.

Nice work methd, as always. Phone booth and motorbike rock, closely followed by the rest of the set. :Paranoid:

This is the widest i went as it got way too busy after that (the 'love' sign to the left and a driveway to the right).

You'll notice i chopped the antenna out :)

this is shot from the left of the above shot (2nd photographer who joined me). picture is not as clean and lose the mountains.

Standard wide shot - a non creative 'memory' photo for them to look back and see where they were (instead of a blurry mess of bokeh).

and some iphone images from Pai, to really give you idea of what it's like!!

this is "coffee table" a coffee shop with only one table - makes me lol every time i think about it. here's the convo with the girl who runs it:

Me: "you don't seem very busy, we the first customer today?"
Her: "yes yes, but no... you the first customer this month!"

    true story!

one of the many fireplaces at the bars in Pai. yes we got very bored on our days off.

you gotta feed yourself good when in thailand :)
