Adobe tells me that they haven't sold a perpetual licence version of Adobe AE since 2017 and if I am to use it I need to subscribe to their bloody expensive Creative Cloud malarkey.
As I already have standalone versions of PS Element and Premiere Elements and Lightroom - I'm not so inclined.

Is there any way I can get AE for free/cheap/2nd hand?

If there's a free alternative that can import the AE project file type, I'm all ears.

All I want to do is take an AE template from envato market
    https://videohive.net/category/after-effects-project-files/logo-stings
and add in my own images/change colours etc as needed to make a video sting for a YouTube channel.

As a once-off? 30 day trials are fully functional and don't leave a watermark or anything.....

Sorry, apparently it's 7 days these days....still an option if you know what you're doing though.

So I bought the templates but no alternative program can open and work with adobe after effects project files.
Ideally I'd like to get a stand-alone version of After Effects. Maybe these are still available somehow / somewhere even 2nd hand?

The Creative Cloud bullshit is just way too expensive for an occasional user like me - even if I was to get After Effects ONLY that's still $30/month.
7 days is really tight given I work all day.
Not sure I'd have enough time to learn how to work AE it AND actually do my little project (mostly involves just putting my own logo image in and modifying the colours) I think.

I even tried downloading Adobe After Effects CC 2018 from Adobe and 'elsewhere' and it won't install. Chucks errors - official version or otherwise.

I think Adobe Creative Suite 6 is the last non-subscription model.
I treat mine like gold. It does what I want. No subscription. 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

I should have bought more CS6 versions. I bought that one through my workplace as an educational supplier for ~$50. Worth it for the 6 DVD's.

So you don't know of any way to get it these days then?

I bought mine 2011. No idea, but Adobe CS6 is probably what your looking for. Adobe doesn't sell it anymore.

For a one-off job I wonder if you might do better just to pay someone? I'm not sure how I feel about Fiverr as a concept, but I have to admit that they've driven the cost of "edit my name into this After Effects template" down to basically nothing.

I was about to suggest this - if it's for business, it may not be worth your time.

Also, 1 month of AE is about $40 or so, paying month to month, so it's also an option, if you're keen...

One off project sign up for trial, if 7 days is not enough that pay one month, than cancel, $30 (or whatever for month to month) it is cheaper than buying a bootleg

OK well I tried doing what I want with the AE trial. I'm having very little luck, but will give it another go.
I presume the best way to go is to not have soundtrack built in, but to have the video and soundtrack separate?
    Or better to build together.

I did have some offers on fiverr but will need to modify that job as someone else did the static logo part for me.
