no its not how it sounds really

just running a old copper based amd cooler like in pic below

is this a normal type amd heatsink fan? id like to change it as its a bit noisy & revs @ 3000rpm. i tried controlling it by the bios or asrock program
but it seems to have a mind of its own

If it looks like that it's the higher end stock cooler, something that shipped with things like the 1090T and most of the FX cpu's, it was introduced with either the higher end phenoms or phenom 2's in 2008 or 2009 (I don't remember which gen) before AMD brought out the original Wraith.

so there's the answer to that, it is a stock cooler, and they aren't very good. (unless you use those copper coolers on the lower end CPU's, then they were pretty good)

They typically didn't last too long before the bearings crapped out and they sounded like jet engines.

good solution is probably a coolermaster Hyper TX3 evo.
Can be had for about $30, will fit in most cases, will be much quieter and offer better cooling. Could go with a 212 if you wanna pony up a bit more cash ($45 ish)

If you're cheap (like me), you could take the fan off the stock cooler and give it a go with some oil to get the noise back down.. I've done that to about 5 of these coolers over the years. Those were the days!

Anything aftermarket that suits AM2/AM3 will fit, or I just replaced mine with something I had lying around and some zip ties.

Even more ghetto than what I'd do, I love it

What CPU are you running out of interest?
Back in the phenom 2 days I found the original coolermaster hyper tx3 was cheap and could keep all the chips I had unlocked and overclocked cool enough. including the 720BE, 955BE, 965BE, 840 and 1090T but as soon as I started playing around with FX CPU's it wasn't enough for what I wanted to do with them so I got a Corsair H80..

If you've got a h100 just sitting there, and it works.. go for it!! :D
