AMD RDNA3 Speculation Thread

AMD have become really good at closing down product leaks. Anything we hear early on is probably wrong, a good guess, or an intentional leak by AMD. Its only when their products hit 3rd parties for packaging, testing etc that 'proper' leaks begin coming.

latest says a lot less shader cores for navi 31
15360 down to 12288 ???



if this is correct, maybe it was all about winding nvidia up? too early to tell of course.

According to greymon55, performance estimates are unchanged to previous leaks. Keep in mind the 3090 had well over twice the cuda cores of the 2080ti but only 45% better the performance at 4k and 30% at 1440p, and the cuda core doubling was even unknown to the AIBs a week before launch.

That's because they suddenly decided to count CUDA cores differently due to being able to do 2x FP32 concurrently. Real world uplift of this is not 2x of course

 

very dissapointing but on the update rnda 2 is gettig cheap very cheap around 1k aud 750usd

 

More rumours, Navi31 now has 384bit/24gb memory apparantly, And one big compute die vs previous rumours of it having 2 mid size compute dies, cache/memory controllers etc still on seperate dies, should be good for 4k performance if true. Still 128bit apparantly for navi33 which seems dumb to me.

yeah nobody rolling out mcm this time tempted just to wait another 2 years for actually new gpus instead of scaled up monolithic

 

More IF cache should alleviate bw concerns. N33 is not a 4k card.

 

Realiscally how far away is this? If it's another 6mo wait or maybe longer nothing annouced at ces ffs

Some leaks to consider

 

I'm very skeptical of the 512bit memory bus rumours, Hasn't happened in a long time and the whole point of infninty cache (which gets quadrupled on RDNA3) is AMD doesn't need as big a memory bus as Nvidia for same performance, bigger die but less memory chips/pcb traces etc. Also I doubt AMD would release/reveal a 7700 before the 7700xt, they'll want to show best cards first before budget cut down versions. The 6600 was released 2 months after the 6600xt to compare.

 

Would there be enough volume/appetite for both 7950 and 7970 SKUs to have fundamentally different dies, VRAM size, and memory bus?

The 6900XT made sense for RDNA2 as essentially very similar to 6800/6800XT and sold in very small numbers.

 

RDNA3 is chiplets so may not actually require a new die, just more dies, but yeah agree it's still gotta be sold enough to justify the new pcb design vram size etc.

 

I can kind of see the point of the 7970, to counter NV's top-end/halo product assuming that's as 4090Ti. I don't think AMD need or really want to compete at every price point. The 7950 for example, if it uses 2 x 8192SP dies and ends up with 12288 active SPs suggest the yield is pretty poor. Can't imagine that it's going to offer good efficiency too in that scenario.

Given NV sells probably 5x more desktop GPU volume than AMD, AMD should just pick the price points it wants to go into battle with and focus on performing well at each of those.

 

Agree does seem odd, again I'm skeptical of that table. I think AMD profit department would regret the 6800 a bit in hindsight as it's cutdown the same amount, but 7nm yields are good so they have to put good dies in it that could be 6800xt. I don't think 5nm yields are poor (anything I've read said they were better than 7nm which given use of EUV is fairly likely, but that was all a year ago), Nvidia is in trouble if they are as the rumours are they are on TSMC 4nm and monolithic vs RDNA3 chiplets.

 

id buy a 7970 just for vr so i dont have to eye strain to see 1ft infront of me
