Note for people planning to Nlite or such, RC2 is only available through Windows Update currently. A standalone SP3 RC2 installer is not yet available. RC1, however is available standalone.

rc2 standalon download would be nice, as well as a list of all updates and hotfixes that will be included in sp3 (I realse it'll be a pretty long list)

The problem with XP is it does everything 98 wished it could do and be. 98 was only as stable as a piss ant 16 bit OS built on DOS OS could be. Today XP has reached a usefulness benchmark that is virtually perfect for business. It's simple, predictable and it just works and works and works and works.

Business doesn't make profit by following IT fashion, there is nothing in Vista that will improve production in your average office. If you don't get an increase in productivity proportanal to the time, interuption and expense incurred then it's just pissing hard earned cash into the wind.

Dates for XP Pro Support status changes:

    http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223

Policy outlining what the dates mean:

    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy

If you're supporting a large XP deployment (and it's likely to change a lot after '09), it may be worth taking out the extended hotfix agreement - things like DST patches (or any non-security patch) for OS's in the Extended Support phase are only available if you have an agreement...

Know it's a bit late, but worth knowing if you're looking at using SP3 to give an extra couple of years (or more) to an existing XP deployment once SP3 is released.

I've got build 3244 installed - when the final version comes out will it update via windows update, or will I have to manually apply the service pack?

You'll have to uninstall the Beta Service Pack before installing the final version. After that you can download the final via WU or download and install manually.

No. 4 would somewhat explain the disappearence of SP3 for testers for well over a week now. It seems MS has gone into lockdown as we haven't even heard a peep from them for quite a while.

What does "expanded set of product keys" mean?

    Run out of keys.

    Underestimated the popularity perhaps.
