Wow that is a lot sooner that I expected, will be very interesting to see what improvements they make. I'm hoping that they focus on tessellation as really this is where Nvidia have them soundly beat (gaming wise). Regardless when these are released HD5870's are going to be flying all over Shop n Swap, CF for me! :D

I'm guessing the refresh will be Southern Islands, hybrid of their next gen and current gen cards.

I so need to replace this 4870... :)

More incredibly biased reporting from Charlie :)

But good news that ATI could get a new generation out. Although i will be waiting for the 28nm parts instead of 40nm to get excited about.

Why? It's at least several months and they won't be that much faster (hybrid design with a few tweaks)

And still 40nm, it'll be just like a 4870 to a 4890 and won't hit till at least end of this year.

Better off getting 5870 now and then wating till 2011 for 28nm next gen stuff.

So is this likely to be just a shrink and tweaks of current tech rather than a full fledged sequel? More a 5890 than a 6870.

It's not a shrink, it's still 40nm so it's just a tweak....nothing much to see here for current 5870 users. Next gen will be 28nm probably coming end 2011.

I refer something moderately fast with heat sink instead of extremely fast with a 1kg heat sink+a vacuum cleaner attached. What is the fastest ATI with heat sink only at the moment?

The 5870 Vapor-X is cool, VERY quiet, fast and surprisingly light.

Do you mean passively cooled or just quiet?

If you genuinely want Heatsink only the POWERCOLOR SCS3 AX5750 or POWERCOLOR Go! Green AX5750 are the fastest 5xxx series I've seen with a passive cooler.

    Links below:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131300&cm_re=5750-_-14-131-300-_-Product

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131346&cm_re=5750-_-14-131-346-_-Product

I couldn't find the powercolor 5750 (in OZ) when I wanted a passively cooled 5xxx so ended up buying a Gigabyte 5450. I'm going to swap that out for a 5770 anyway as the 5770 is silent in my opinion and runs cooler.

If it's silence you want the stock fan on the egg cooler 5770 is very quiet (I have one) and the Vapor-X 5870 is inaudible.

Back on topic. Hooray for this thread!!!!

I want to read about a 5890 or a 6870 right now please Mr Digital Monkey.

cause i havent focused on any gfx launch where new gen is on the same fab, how much will the improvement of these cards suffer because of the lack of a new fab? can we expect the same kind of increases that we normally get with a new gen?

Probably be something like going from the 4870 to the 4890, same fab, big performance increase

That wasn't a big increase in reality..so i wouldn’t use the word “major” when comparing performance of those two cards.

These new revised GPU's are meant to bring an increase in performance, better tessellation, UVD3 for 3d blu-ray playback support and I’m sure some other minor tweaks here and there.
