faster card same gen etc will use more power.

No I'm not taking the piss. 6970 is the bigger brother to the 6870. of course the more powerful card will use more energy etc.

search the Nvidia thread and you will find the discussion or ask FLUID.

Im pretty sure 460 SLI on just beats the 5870, 5970 does flatten them.

460's are slower but not by much, comes to only a few frames in some of these benchmarks.

    Not this much more!

You asked me what he means, I told you he's taking the piss OUT OF YOU. Not the other way around.
What were trying to say is its not worth DOUBLE the power consumption, ie from 150W with the 6870 -> 300W with the 6970.

Normal people shouldn't have this much trouble understanding something so simple.

    Eh?

    6870 has 1 x 6pin, 1 x 8 pin, so 225W total.............

So, it's not double, or whatever acidburn000 is talking about.

sorry my bad sarcasm meter was broken. 300watt will be 50 watt more then what 480 uses. but if it's the king it can use what ever power it wants. people will still buy.

I thought it drew 300W of power at LOAD, that's where I was mistaken and I admitted it. Simple misunderstanding of the AMD slides.

I did not say it is double. I know nothing about the wattage so get you facts straight please.

The "rated" TDP of the 480 is ~260W - but most reviewers find when under load it uses in excess of 300W.

    That's fine :p

quick 06 bench. Note the clocks are 1000/1250 which is the max of the sliders in the Afterburner I have and CCC. No voltage increase! Bodes well for some real fun with these cards with a bit of a voltage bump :leet:

pci-e is able to supply 60w-70w (not sure exactly what it is but its very near that) which is how low end cards are able to run without any pci-e power cables.

I thought the TDP of 480 was 250watt. so do you have a link to the card using more then 300watt please.

"You can purchase the HD 6870 now at Newegg for $240 and the HD 6850 for $180."

So we should be paying what we are paying the GTX 460's now... gee how the hell are the GTX 460's and the 470's going to survive now :S

GTX480 has exactly the same required connectors as the 6970 yet its TDP is higher?

Yes I know they have the same power connectors. I have had both cards. Just checked the real TDP for GTX480 is 250watts. It uses more as you overclock more.

Sorry I went a little off topic. The 6870 will be a good card when price/performance hits the magic spot. I hope the 6870 drops to around $230 before Xmas as I need a few not for my main rig but for my networked computers.
