    Don't kid yourself.

Both NVidia and AMD would charge you more if they think it would sell the same.

Neither of them is a consumer saviour.

I didn't say either company was a consumer saviour - ATI came to the table with cheaper GPU's, within a month NVIDIA GPU's dropped by 40%.

I'm saying that GPU's have dropped from their usual $1k mark to ~$500 for a top end single GPU.

Agreed prices are very cheap at the moment.

If you game on a single monitor you really don't need to spend a lot and be happy.

170 or 200 bucks for a 5770 or 460 768 and you are good to go.

I just got a U2711 and i think im going to struggle now on my single 460, but my mate who uses dual 30" dells said the Pixel Pitch is so nice you dont need 4xAA, 2 is enough so that is nice to hear, ill test it tonight.

I think that has more to do with the USD vs AUD than anything else.

It plays a part, but I'm talking about 3 - 4 years ago here, mate. Back then, the dollar was not as rock solid as it was now.

It was because NVIDIA had a massive fucking grip of the entire GPU market - they absolutely dominated, after the 5 series failure, they went hardcore and 3 generations later, we had what was arguably THE BEST GPU launch and success of ALL TIME - the 8800 series.

This solidified NVIDIA as the absolute champion of the GPU - they could command ANY PRICE they wanted - and you'd pay it. I paid $1349 for 2 x dual GPU cards back then.

This is how the great has fallen - they were the undefeated champion UNTIL the 4870 which was half the price, and have scrambled to catch up.

This is why I wait, patiently for another 12 - 18 months to see how NVIDIA will come out of this - scarred, beaten - but hopefully a champion.

i got no love for either
whats cheap and runs well at the time.

used to have a 8800 768 paid like 700 bucks for it swore to never do that again.
    then bought a 5870 for $450
    much nicer

it all has to do with competition and market costs like ram etc but more competition.

nvidia had to charge what they did for the 470/480 because thats what it costs, if it didn't perform as weel as it did they would come very close to doing a 3dfx..(you know the company they murdered! :p)
but it did perform well and so my guessis they are getting sales but to slow and too few to crank out the next range faster.
if they do slip more behind they will definately be looking at a very hard time ahead

and all that measn to us is dearer gear

so go nvidi go...get up off your fat asses and make something :)

I'm the same - whoever provides me with the clear winner, I'll buy.

If NVIDIA released a 1000W-sucker, but was 4 x the 480 performance - I'd get more than one.

I enjoy the GPU wars - very much so. EVERYONE wins :)

No it's because the HD3870 was a 2nd or 3rd tier card, wheras the 5870 was the fastest single card at the time it was launched (and was $600)

    GPU prices haven't increased..

Those I bought over the yrs:

    Geforce 3 mid 2001: ~$800
    6800GT: mid 2004 ~$700 (ultra was more)
    8800GTX end 2006: ~$800

Thanks to the Dual-GPU fad since 2008, Top of the line SINGLE GPU cards are notably Cheaper than they used to be

I more meant, single GPU that is 2 - 4 x faster than a 480, then I'll buy four of THOSE cards ;)

5760x1080, minimum 120fps, max AA, max detail, max AF - in all current/upcoming games.

    hot.

If you want that why don't you just buy three or four 480s. For a card to be 4x faster the. A GTX 480 in single GPU it would need to be like 5x faster then the HD 5870.

    That's why I'll wait for 6970 - if it gives ~30 - 50% more perf (we know the 68x0 will be ~80 - 100% speed of 5770).

Then, if it does - i'll grab 3 and 3 x 480's at the same time. Or, hopefully there's a refresh (or at least NEWS of it) to come out soon.

I'll be in the market for 3 x 6970's - if NVIDIA bring something out, then I'll grab those too, or be impatient and grab some 480's.
