This was taken late last year from a London - New York flight. We were pleasantly surprised when the flight attendant told us to look out the window. I'm not sure how common this is but I think we were quite lucky..

The cramped seats didn't help, but we managed to partially set up our tripod. We used some pillows to reduce the reflections on the window.

Shots were taken with a D600 + Tamron 24-70 2.8, VC was switched on to help with the questionable tripod set up we had.

    1) This was shot at 10sec, EDIT this was actually the last shot we did when it started fading away. the plane tilted a little which didn't help..

    2) This was at 6sec. Sharpest shot of the bunch.

    3) At 4sec, the plane moved, the tripod slipped.. but probably my favourite..

    Gorgeous!

Although, I'd be freaking out if I was on a plane when that happened and the pilot announced it. Not because of any fear of electromagnetic psychic alien waves, mind you, but because of all the passengers moving to one side and unbalancing the plane in order to see it :D

That's pretty awesome... Bonus points if you can crop out the wing on any of those shots!

    awesome...

personally id leave the wing in, kinda adds to the feeling of being 'above it all'.
then theres the whole red and green mix going on...

i love the last one, the addition of the clouds just does it for me....

Really cool. I like the red lighting on the wing too.

As long as you aren't in a plane full of polish people. Too many poles in the right side of the plane leads to disaster.

(Props if anyone gets the joke)

There was just a flight attendant who walked around telling the few who were still awake in business (I was flying for work), luckily the plane was quite empty so I was able to find an empty row near the middle of the plane. I was a bit shocked they didn't broadcast it.. I imagine most people would be willing to wake up to see it.

I heard you're most likely to see it from the Canada-London flight, I remember seeing a timelapse someone did of this.

Shit yea! I'd be hella pissed if I was on that flight with no announcement and you'd shown me the photos once I woke up!

Should have tried pushing the envelope by getting a cockpit shot

Awesome shots, thanks for sharing!!

Have you called Virgin with a sales pitch yet? Because those would make some outstanding promo shots... :D

Seeing an Aurora from the ground, live and in person, was very high on my bucket list. Even higher now.

This was my first thought too. I'd be watermarking them more obviously and sending them across to the Virgin marketing team. Particularly that second shot.

    Awesome work !
