I ma running into a yamaha 7.1 receiver via optical.

What is the best soundcard for this?

I have 2 x gfx cards with HDMI in SLI so running optical via HDMI won't work from my research.

I know my signal is compressed via optical.

No soundcard needed for digital- if you continue using optical, the onboard optical out is fine, assuming you use the receiver for both speakers and cans?

HDMI is better- higher bandwidth than optical. You should be able to use a HDMI connection direct to the receiver, it's worth a shot.

    1. check your playback devices list
    2. connect via hdmi cable
    3. set HDMI output as the default playback device
    4. run speaker setup to tell windows to send 7.1

I know some people report problems with SLI+hdmi out on nvidia. Do you have hdmi on your motherboard?

If not, do you have a spare pcie slot? Other solution is to run a third GPU -doesn't need to be anything with 3d muscle- and use it's hdmi out for audio
