I've just got my ABN back (they cancelled it after not doing anything with it for years) and I've registered a personal domain ie. firstnamelastname.com.au (the .com was taken).

This is going to be my main email address for all personal use moving forward to give out to friends, use with all my forums/other internet services, put on resumes, etc. I want it to be professional and easy to remember/memorable.

What do people think is the best email address to setup? Options so far include mail@, firstname@, firstnamelastname@ (which means the emailaddress is the same as the domain).

Or is it really a matter of who gives a f?

    i would go mail@

    just seems the sensible option.

if the domain was lastname.com.au, you would go firstname@lastname.com.au

Pretty much. I just have *@mydomain.com forwarded to my gmail, and reply from whatever I feel like.

So I'd say just go with whats appropriate for the situation at the time. (When I sign up for crap, I give it its own email address for my domain, so I know which places sell on my email address to marketers)

Failing that, firstname@domainname.com works well enough.

lastname.com.au was taken too (it's a very common name in some parts of the world) but it's really annoying that it's basically a dead old site.

I've setup my username as firstnamelastname so that's the default address, plus added nicknames for mail@ and bogusjimmy@ (which means I can send from these addresses), plus ticked the box for forwarding all mail that doesn't match any address to me (dunno if this means I'm gonna get heaps of spam?).

Was hoping someone was going to come up with something cool I hadn't thought of.

I have one of the least common last names in Australia and some jackass has the .com, .com.au and .net.au addresses  sitting on pretty much a blank page doing nothing. Although I checked just then and it seems they've all expired

I went for my initials, a 3 letter domain = win!

Just buy a 10 email pack or similar if you're just using it for mail, then you can have mail@domain.com, or you can have your name for more specific mail directed to you personally...

common prefixes are mail@domain or contactus@domain

It really depends, I just have firstname@domain

EDIT: well their .net.au domain has expired, I feel like registering it to be a prick.

If you're running a mail catchall, you will start getting lots of spam over time. Best to avoiding doing this. Set up a few specific mail accounts and leave it at that.

I use firstname@domainname.com - its logical and easy.

Using Google to host the email, so I can setup 50 users & unlimited nicknames.

I'll see how I go with the catch all and spam.

You could just use DNS but the price difference is negligible plus there's the amount of spam that gmail accounts collect. I've gone off the grid with my own email host and as yet in almost 8 months have not collected a piece of spam.

    I second this.

I'm in the process of setting up something similar. A guy at my work basically has his mail server set up in such a way so that *@hisdomain.com gets forwarded to the email of his choice, which gives you all the advantages FatBoyNotSoSlim mentioned above. I'll most definitely be setting up my mail server in this way.

If you want to try and keep things as simple as possible though I'd stick with mail@yourdomain.com.au.

    I used to use me@firstnamelastname.com

I realise you've already bought a domain but if you wanted to push for the firstname@lastname idea you could look at .id.au domains.

Anything other than .com or .com.au just doesn't roll off the tounge as easily.

I catch all my email and direct it to my gmail account, google's spam filters are pretty good so I don't really have a problem with that.

In my domain mail setup I also have the option for it to discretely drop emails, so I have spam@domain.com setup for that and sign up to doozy stuff with that one

In line with the email addresses for certain roles thing you could have 'employme@domain.com.au' or 'recruitment@domain.com.au' for jobs...

FWIW I have firstname@lastname.com and .net and I've given a few email addresses to family to use aswell.

I guess having lastname.com(.au) has the added benefit of being able to get he whole family on board. Too bad I have such a common surname.

Not that the family is all that large (hence being able to get the domain in the first place) but yeah it's pretty cool giving them email accounts. I should start charging a fee to subsidise the costs.

Actually the only reason i have .net is the .com was taken in the first place. By some freaking cybersitting mob. They wanted ~$1k for it originally.Told them to jam it, then it became $500 then $250. I just left it and eventually they let it expire so I registered it for like $12/yr...

One of the ocau memebers gives out specific emails so he can trace spam/

i.e. telstra gets the email telstra@domain.com, etc etc, they all forward to webmaster @domain.com.

I think its a great idea, when i get a domain i'll do that myself.

    ATm i dont have a domain. So its firstname.lastname@gmail.com first_last@hotmail.com and last.first@gmail.com and firstlast.spam@gmail.com

Slightly off topic here, anyone (like the OP I guess) have an ABN for the hell of it?

I have a pretty awesome (in my mind atleast) domain and I want to grab an ABN incase I ever want to do something with the name, or to get business discounts on things. Just I"m not sure of, if I never use it for anything, do I need to file tax returns or other paperwork for it every year?

i dont think you need it, unless you are contracted by a company that pays to your business name instead of you personally

AFAIK you need an ABN to register a .com.au
