Got a seagate 8tb for 20% off a month or two ago on ebay. There's a lacie 8tb on there atm also for 20% off, but there's no way of telling what brand they use in there, I'd like to avoid WD as they're apparently using helium in the drives which could leak in as little as 5 years. I got my other 8tb a year or two ago on sale, but don't remember what time of year?

Bonus question, is it true that a NAS drive used as an internal drive could time out when copying and give a fake crc error?

In my experience, Lacie units tend to have Seagate/Samsung drives inside.

I'm not sure there is a best time, I see discounts constantly on hdd's. Just go with the ebay X% off deals when you need a drive.
