Saw some footage of this quite a while back. I'm going to say maybe a year ago? Seems to have had a lot of polish time, so hopefully it's a lot of fun.

I know the whole Wukong / Monkey King thing has been done to death, but I still really love the interpretations. This has a bit of a "Dark Souls" vibe which has also been done to death, but looks like it'll be fun.

    Character design is very cool.

Yeah I remember seeing footage from about 12 months back. I searched this forum for an older thread, but couldn't find one.

The legend of Monkey ("Monkey King") is a real Chinese fable, this game looks like it has taken a few hints from the TV show as well (like shrinking the staff and storing it in his ear). I'm quite looking forward to it!

In the original story, Sun Wukong typically shrinks his staff to the size of a toothpick and stores it behind his ear. So this is very faithful to the source material.

The original Dragon Ball (Son Goku as a child with a monkey tail), complete with staff, riding on a cloud, is also (very loosely) based on the same legend.

"Alex Kidd", the old Sega mascott, was loosely based on the character too.

The whole Sun Wukong thing has been done many times in modern media.

    To slightly less old games:

    To modern games:

    And film:

This new game is by far the coldest rendition I've seen though. Even including Monkey Magic.

Looks like they made a sequel too:

Anyways, enough thread crapping from me. I'm pumped for this new game.

I've seen the two Monkey King movies. They were great fun, but this other one is still my favourite:

While we're on the subject, this has to be one of the most Chinese depictions of Monkey I've seen.

And we absolutely cannot forget the cult classic TV series, Monkey Magic.

BTW, for those who haven't played it, I strongly recommend Enslaved: Odyssey to the West from 2010, which is also inspired by the Wukong legend:

Don't be fooled by its age. This game is outrageously underrated. The music, characters, and visuals are drop dead gorgeous. I have played it from start to finish at least three times, and it feels fresh every time. If you can get your hands on the premium edition, you'll be well rewarded.

Best of all, you can push it up to 4K with an .ini tweak!

    You play Monster Hunter?

This has more Team Ninja/Soulsbourne/Devil May Cry Mechanics than GOW from some of the boss fights and engagements if you watch closely.

I've watched people play it on stream. TBH those 3rd person games all look the same to me.

Ironically... god of war used to be somewhat similar to devil may cry in gameplay (pre reboot that is)

The gameplay footage above definitely says sekiro (soulsbourne/tenchu) and NIOH (team ninja) to me, agreed there.
