    Here's a dumb question.

I've never owned a BB before so I'm not quite sure how it works but I want to purchase a BB outright and just put my sim in it and start using it...

I want to set up my gmail via push on the BB.

Is this possible without having to join a specific BB plan?

    Hi,

What are these devices like? I'm familiar with a lot of the Nokia stuff and currently use a 6120. I also briefly used a smallish Blackberry last year when I was setting it up for a client (7100?) Is there a nice way to migrate my contact information to/from the Nokia?

I'll be on the pilot program for this stuff at work and the Bold is what we'll be using.

What's the data access like? We'll presumably be running BES but how do these devices access the Internet? Via the BES or via the telco network (the device will be running on the Telstra NextG network).

    thanks!

Easiest way I've found is to use Nokia PC suite to extract your contacts from your Nokia to Outlook Address book, then use Blackberry Desktop Manager to import Outlook contacts to your Blackberry.

You'll need a Blackberry plan. Without one all you can do is make calls and sms.

    reviving old thread.

anyone here had problems using their Bold with WiFi?

I've got a Bold and I can't get it connected to my home wifi.

I don't have any mac address filtering, I'm using WEP. I've tried open and shared keys.

The error message on my phone states that it couldn't find the DHCP server. any ideas?

Posted this on Whirlpool, but figured it might get answered quicker over here.

I just got a Bold, can I pop my optus simcard in ($89 cap, 850mb data) and will this let me use the net/access e-mails/gmail account, etc.

I don't need to get this "blackberry data plan" on top do I ???

    Thankyou!

You will need an actual Blackberry Plan otherwise you won't be able to setup your push email accounts and other services. If you don't have a Blackberry plan you won't have the required service books on your phone, you will only be able to make calls and send smss.

    How?

    Im extremely interested.

I have a Telstra branded Bold (unlocked) and use an Optus SIM.

Is it possible to re-flash the firmware somehow to remove this branding?

If not to use Optus icons, at least default icons? I hate the "T"s everywhere!

I believe you can use a normal data plan if you are a BIS user. Can't confirm this as i run BES. But it's what i've been told.

I take it you tried to manually add the network and had no luck ??

Another on to try is -Go into Manage connections, WIFI options and edit your profile. Is "Automatically obtain IP address and DNS" Ticked? it should be.

Mine just magically worked on all the different WiFi networks i've connected too.

I believe the answer is NO. It's linked to the Vendor ID file on the BB.

To get access to this i've read you need a 'dongle' the BB use or a copy of engineering OS to blow it away.

Good luck with that . .

Or go buy an un-branded one . . them's the breaks for getting it cheaper on plans . . you get pretty logo's . . LOL
