    hey

i want to grab some blue swimmer crab meat.
My local fish shop doesnt sell it so was hoping to get some in pharan market.

Does anyone know if you can get fresh blue swimmer crab meat there or does it only come frozen?

Do you know if you can get 500g packs or only 1kg?
How much should I expect to pay per kilo? Im guessing $35.

    thanks

Where do you live, death? My local market (Box Hill) carries it.

Blue swimmer crab is not something I buy very often so I can't tell you the price. But - the ones in Prahran market are usually fresh.

What are you planning to do with it :)

I'm pretty sure the only way of getting fresh crab meat, is if you pick it out yourself. Not many fishmongers are going to want to sit there and pick out crab meat for u:p

You'll find most of the packaged crab meat is from Asia, as labour is cheaper.

i live in east st kilda.
Was thinking the market close to me.

I was going to do my crab cakes but with actual crab meat instead of the cheapo stuff.

Scon suggested prawns so if I have no luck with the crab meat may have to be prawns.

Coles and woolies has started selling containers of "fresh" crab meat in the dips/smoked trout section. The reason I say "fresh" is because it can last for a a month (based on the expiry dates I saw). Not sure what they've done to it to make it last so long, but I did taste it once straight out of the container. Not as sweet compared to you picking your own crab meat, but better than the frozen/canned stuff.

You'd be better off using the refrigerated meat the poster above suggested than fresh whole crab yourself if youre not experienced with whole crabs. There is an art to getting every piece of tasty crab meat out of a whole crab and if you didnt know what you were doing, you would be binning good meat without knowing it.

A containerful of crabmeat is pretty convenient, but I've never tasted any that has been really nice, it's never quite as sweet as freshly picked.

i checked out the supermarket but they didn't have any.
I checked the deli section and the dips / smoked salmon section.

I found some at a fish shop.
Frozen spanner crab meat 500g $40.

I bought it because I couldn't be stuffed going to the market.

I saw fresh blue swimmer crab today for about $12 a kilo but I couldn't be stuffed extracting the meat and the fish guy wouldn't do it.

I'll be doing my crab cakes again and hopefully get a chance to take pics for those interested.

When I lived in Perth we used to go crabbing in the Mandurah Estuary. Wade around the muddy flats, get sunburnt, and only catch 2-3 crabs per person of legal size. The worst was the 1 hour drive home, smelling of mud. Either that or endure the excruciatingly cold public shower. Somehow it made the crabs taste even better when we got around to cooking it :)

cool, so you must have some kick ass crab recipe?
How long have you been interested in cooking? Seems like a real passion for you.
I always loved eating food but it was only until recently i really started getting into cooking.

Nah dude, eating is my passion. Cooking only came when I realized I could not afford to eat out all the time :) As for crab recipes - I only do it one way - Chilli crab. Don't know anything else.

Ah blue swimmers .. takes me back to my youth at Port Parham, north of Adelaide (tidal shallow beach with a 500 metre to 750 metre runoff). We towed plastic baby baths around and used scoop nets made out of chicken wire. Scooped the crabs into the baths and went back to beach when the bath started to sink.

Even then we only took male crabs .. it is illegal to take the females now.

Crabbers over the years placed 44 gallon drums on the beach which we filled with seawater set a fire underneath and cooked the crabs .. gourged ourselves silly and took the rest home .. ah the old days :D

Me and two friends eat mudcrab religiously, every tuesday in Richmond. Try the 'typhoon shelter' style mudcrab or 'deep fried with salted egg yolk', better than any other crab out there!

Pity Australia has no 'Shanghai mitten crab', the best crab ever :)

sorry, didn't want to create a new thread. but anyway, i had some crab cravings the other day so decided to goto my local fish monger for some blue swimmer crabs. they had cooked and uncooked ones. i ended up buying 2 cooked ones, but both ended up to be rotten. wasn't expensive, but disappointed that i couldn't satisfy my cravings. aren't uncooked dead crabs suppose to be bad? if that is the case, i'm surprised they are allowed to be sold?

Local fishmongers sell them (at $20/kg here), so there can't be anything wrong with them, i'd imagine they follow the same advise as all seafood, best eaten fresh.

We always cooked out crabs live, in the freezer for 15mins or so to put them to sleep then straight in the boiling water.

i've been told crab flesh turns very quickly even when frozen after they are dead. supposedly there's only a very small time frame where it is still safe to eat the meat after they die. the best way is to cook them alive then freeze or clean the crab out then freeze the meat.
