Build log Supermicro Xeon D-1518

    This all started building my NAS units with PC parts lying around. Mostly they were desktop boards with attached HDDs with or without RAID cards. Which worked well for a while. Then as my data storage needs grew, so did the machines I was using. This is the next evolution of my storage server.

    This is going to be an AIO Vmware based on the Xeon D chip from Intel. This chip looks like an amazing, with very comprehensive options for storage and IO

    I am going to base it on a Supermicro chassis. I have found these to have very few problems. I normally buy them from auctions as old SAN storage processors. A lot of the Compellent nodes were based on this. You can also find the odd unit from things like proxy servers and WAN optimisation.

    My current server is a Supermicro chassis with an ASUS LGA 2011 board, 64Gb RAM, and a 3930k.

    Back to the Supermicro Xeon D motherboards. The availability of these boards has made it hard to source one. They normally arrive in stock and then are very quickly sold out. I bought an SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SDV-4C-TLN2F-O Intel Xeon D-1520 Mini ITX Server Motherboard from Newegg in Dec 2015 and waited for it to arrive.

    When it arrived it was such a small board. With so many IO connectors and ports.

    • Intel Xeon processor D-1540, Single socket FCBGA 1667; 8-Core, 45W System on Chip
    • Up to 128GB ECC RDIMM DDR4 2133MHz or 64GB ECC/non-ECC UDIMM in 4 sockets
    • Expansion slot: 1x PCIe 3.0 x16, M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4, M Key 2242/2280 Dual 10GbE LAN and Intel i350-AM2 dual port GbE LAN 6x SATA3 (6Gbps) ports via SoC 2x USB 3.0 ports (rear), 4x USB 2.0 ports (via headers) 1x SuperDOM, 1x COM, TPM 1.2 header, GPIO and SMbus headers 12V DC input and ATX Power Source

    I quickly learned that there is an issue with the X552 10Gb ethernet card. I was not able to get any of the network ports to establish a link with any switch I had. So this board was quickly RMA'ed and I waited again to find another board. It seems they have a negotiation problem with the MAC layer. Which some people have solved by forcing it in the switch.

    Again I waited, this time, to get a Flex board with has a bit more room and SFP+ ports. Instead of the 10GBase-T ports, which should solve any of the problems with the link. The wait was finally over again when the Supermicro X10SDV-4C-7TP4F became in stock at the wired zone.

    This time, everything works, and there are no issues. They have also fixed SR-IOV which was also taken out of the previous version. This is a second release chip seems to have solved quite a lot of issues. It is also more power efficient.

    What I found out is Newegg doesn't warranty the parts after the 30-day return policy finishes. They also were able to provide a return shipping form, which helped with the return costs. The first board was $100 AUD in shipping alone, which I lost when returning the board. The second time wiredzone shipping was $140 USD or $182 AUD.

    The total cost of the board from wiredzone was $573USD + $140USD shipping. Which is around $926 AUD.

    I've been considering a couple of these boards for various tasks.

    Firstly at home to replace my X58 Micro with i7-970 and 24GB RAM running a few VM's - this thing uses too much power for a home VM test lab and kids Minecraft server :rolleyes:

    Want to get one of the mini ITX boards with SFP+ but the one I'm after isn't anywhere yet (X10SDV-8C-TLN4F+) coupled up with one of their 1RU front port chassis (SC505-203B) to sit with my TP-Link T1700G-28TQ ... To go with a new NAS for iSCSI like the QNAP TS-531P or TS-853X.

    The other purpose is work where we have just run Cat6a to locations around the building from the server room, and my desk happens to be one of them :thumbup:

    Considering one of the quad or hex cores, X10SDV-4C-TLN4F or X10SDV-6C-TLN4F in a neat little SG05 case with GTX 1060 ... Should last me a while ;)

    I'm also keen for some updates. I'm looking to build a bigger freenas box, which these sort of boards seem perfect for, except for the fact that the network doesn't work!

    I will have an update soon. This time, there will be more nodes.

    I have a few things to add. The onboard 10Gbe Intel nic had some compatibility issues.
    The network ports finally work in Vmware 6.0/6.5. I am now able to use these ports, after returning the first board I received. Also, general availability is good for these parts. They were quite hard to find for a while.

    I will have some updates soon on the VSAN and ScaleIO systems I was able to build. With HCI, running Vmware VCentre/ESXi 6.5.

    There were a lot of issues with the 10Base-T on these board, that has been solved with the move to SFP+. I have not had any compatibility issues with Dell and Netgear switches.

    Power consumption on these boards is pretty amazing. They boot running around 60-70w, and then idle at around 30-40w. I was seeing a lot of power being lost just in the PSU's I was using. They were 1200W Supermicro 1RU Gold Plus 80 PSU.

    These boards have a 12V input, as well as a ATX input. So you could get a efficient DC PSU, and run them off a 12V rail. I was thinking about building a cluster chassis, to see how lean I could make it. I have now moved on to other projects. I will try to post the write up I have of the build process.
