In between a thousand other projects, large and small, I thought I'd have a bit of fun with a heap of junk destined for landfill.

Mech has been a bit of an interest never followed up, so it's time to try my hand. There are lots of cool mech references and artists online to take inspiration from, but I really want to come up with my very own shape.

Aside from a very loose stick-figure sketch to begin with, I am essentially making this one up as I go along, very much dependant on the materials at hand.

I still have a lot more tech-looking gear to attach to it before the armour plating goes on, then a paint job with my new airbrush system I got for my birthday.

Looks like it could be an ED-209.

For the uninitiated, could someone skilfully explain please, what a "mech" is?

(I sort of know, and can Google, but it's for the thread, and I don't want to give a half-assed definition...)

Looks like it's going to be a chicken walker type. Will it be heavily arms and armored or more balance type?

    Mech = robot

Never played, saw, heard of Mechwarrior, Battletech or similar? Never watched Robotech?

Nah, I'm a fantasy guy as opposed to a sci-fi guy. I mean I've heard of them. Played Space Hulk for an hour or two back in 1993.
    Succinct.

I got the vibe a mech was a particular subset of robot.

And don't say "mechanical", ya bastard. :p

Look at you guys go!!! Having cool conversations while I'm slaving away over a milo....

    Back to work!!

Made the two rear hydraulic rams and attached them and their hoses. Started on the right weapon pod and started to bling it up with chopped up cable ties.

It is really, a mech (or mecha) is piloted as opposed to being autonomous.

Yes, typically a mech is an assault tank, piloted by one or more crew and bristling with weapons and armour, that walks on legs instead of tracks or wheels.

    Nice Baz.
As a nerd who gets little game time, my pretty much exclusive game to play is mechwarrior online, so looking forward to a Baz flavoured chassis.

This hasn't aged particularly well, but at the time it was one of the most awesome game intro sequences ever:

Also used the corners of a plastic bottle of chainsaw bar oil for armoured plates on the legs.

Front filled in and base coat applied. That makes it all one machine. I have a few armoured plates and shields to screw on over some of the round parts to break them up. The last few airbrush accessories will arrive tomorrow, then I can start the paint detailing proper.
